Kabelo Gwamanda is a South African politician who was the mayor of Johannesburg from May 2023 until August 2024. A member of the Al Jama-ah party,he was the ninth executive mayor of the metropolitan municipality since 2016.
After fellow Al Jama-ah councillor Thapelo Amad resigned as mayor of Johannesburg due to pressure from coalition partners,the largest party in council,the African National Congress (ANC),endorsed Gwamanda for the position of mayor on 5 May 2023 in order to keep its alliance with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF),another party in council. [1] [2] He was elected during a council vote held via secret ballot on that same day,receiving 139 votes out of the 266 votes. [3] [4] Gwamanda announced his mayoral committee shortly after his election. [5]
The Democratic Alliance (DA) caucus in council has called Gwamanda a "scammer" over allegations that he scammed residents into investing in a funeral/investment scheme through his company iThemba Lama Afrika. [6]
Gwamanda delivered his maiden State of the City Address on 6 June 2023. [7] The following day,Gwamanda fell ill during the debate on the State of the City Address and was hospitalised. [8]
On 13 August 2024,after coming under pressure from Al Jama-ah's coalition partner,the ANC, [9] Gwamanda announced his resignation as Johannesburg mayor. [10] On 16 August 2024,he was replaced as mayor by Dada Morero,who was elected to a second,non-consecutive,term. [11]
Gwamanda was arrested on 20 October 2024 for fraud around an alleged funeral policy scam that he ran in 2011. [12]

Herman Samtseu Philip Mashaba is a South African politician,entrepreneur and the current president of ActionSA,a party he launched on 29 August 2020. He served as the Mayor of Johannesburg from 2016 to 2019. He is the founder of the hair product company Black Like Me. He is famous in South Africa for his background:he grew up struggling against poverty,and claims to have struggled against the apartheid government,to open his own hair business,which became the biggest hair brand in South Africa,making him a millionaire. He publicly backed Mmusi Maimane in the Democratic Alliance leadership race. He wrote the autobiography Black Like You and his campaign manager,Michael Beaumont,recently published a biography called "The Accidental Mayor". A biography of Mashaba later published by Prince Mashele was referred to as "unauthorised" until it controversially emerged that Mashaba himself had paid Mashele R12.5million for the project. Mashaba refers to himself as a libertarian and "capitalist crusader" whose highest value is "individual freedom."

On 21 April 2021,President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the elections to be held on Wednesday,27 October 2021. It had been recommend by Dikgang Moseneke to delay the municipal elections until 2022. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) requested the Constitutional Court to support the date postponement. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supported the date postponement while the Democratic Alliance (DA) was against the postponement of the date. The Constitutional Court dismissed the application to postpone the date until 2022,ruling that they had to take place between 27 October and 1 November. On 9 September 2021,the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs,Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma announced that the elections would be held on 1 November.

He was a member of the African National Congress and the party's regional chair. During the administration of Parks Tau,he served as the MMC for Finance.
Mzwandile Collen Masina is a South African politician from Gauteng who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly since June 2024. He is the chairperson of Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Trade,Industry and Competition. He was formerly the Mayor of Ekurhuleni from 2016 to 2021 and the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry from 2014 to 2016.

This was the 7th general election held under the conditions of universal adult suffrage since the end of the apartheid era in 1994. Mpho Louisa Phalatse is a South African medical doctor and politician who was the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. A member of the Democratic Alliance,she served in the position from 22 November 2021 until her ousting in a motion of no-confidence on 26 January 2023. She is the first woman to serve as mayor of the metropolitan municipality,which was established in 2000. She is the first black woman to serve as mayor of the city of Johannesburg and only the second female mayor of the city after Jessie McPherson,who served from 1945 to 1946.

Sello Enoch Dada Morero is a South African politician who has been the Mayor of Johannesburg since 16 August 2024,a position which he previously held for 25 days,from 30 September 2022 until 25 October 2022 when the erstwhile Mayor,Mpho Phalatse,was reinstated through the courts. Morero is the regional chairperson of the African National Congress in Johannesburg.
Thapelo Amad is a South African politician and imam,and a former mayor of Johannesburg. A member of the Johannesburg City Council,Amad is affiliated with the Al Jama-ah party. On 27 January 2023,he was elected mayor of Johannesburg with the support of the African National Congress (ANC). His election made him the first Muslim to serve as mayor of Johannesburg. He resigned as mayor on 24 April 2023 to avoid being defeated in a motion of no confidence.
