Kaja Draksler (born 6 February 1987 in Kranj, Slovenia) [1] is a Slovenian pianist and composer. [2]
Draksler started playing the piano at the age of 4, and graduated from the Ljubljana High School of Music in 2005. She graduated at the Conservatory in Groningen where she studied jazz piano in 2009. Until 2013, she studied composition under Richard Ayres at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. She wrote her final thesis on the structures within improvisation of the American pianist Cecil Taylor. She occasionally stayed in New York to have lessons with Jason Moran and Vijay Iyer. [1] [3]
While studying in Groningen, Draksler performed with her Acropolis Quintet. About the same time, she co-founded the BadBooshBand. Her solo performance at the Ljubljana Jazz Festival was released on CD in 2013. She performed with Susana Santos Silva at the Moers Festival. [4] In 2016 she also played at the Moldejazz with Susana Santos Silva. [5] At the 2017 JazzFest Berlin she impressed the audience in a trio with Petter Eldh and Christian Lillinger. [1] [6]
In 2007 she was a part of the European Movement Jazz Orchestra, for which she also composed music (the CD Live in Coimbra 2007).In 2007 she wrote the concert Orpheus and Eurydice for accordion and orchestra, which was premiered and recorded by Janez Dovč and the Slovenian Philharmonic. She also composed for the Metropole Orkest and the Italian Instabile Orchestra.
Draksler's music has been described as being "in the border area and in the intersection of jazz, free improvised music, classical modernism and new music". [2] It contains some elements of folk music of the Balkans and Slovenia, functioning "in the sense of an imaginary folklore". [2] Draksler has been heavily influenced by Cecil Taylor; whom she wrote a dissertation on.
Marilyn Crispell is an American jazz pianist and composer. Scott Yanow described her as "a powerful player... who has her own way of using space... She is near the top of her field." Jon Pareles of The New York Times wrote: "Hearing Marilyn Crispell play solo piano is like monitoring an active volcano... She is one of a very few pianists who rise to the challenge of free jazz." In addition to her own extensive work as a soloist or bandleader, Crispell is also known as a longtime member of saxophonist Anthony Braxton's quartet in the 1980s and '90s.

Sylvie Courvoisier is a composer, pianist, improviser and bandleader. She was born and raised in Lausanne, Switzerland, and has been a resident of New York City since 1998. She won Germany’s International Jazz Piano Prize in 2022 and was named Pianist of the Year for 2023 in the international critics poll of Spanish jazz publication El Intruso. NPR’s Kevin Whitehead has encapsulated the distinctive character of Courvoisier’s art this way: “Some pianists approach the instrument like it’s a cathedral. Sylvie Courvoisier treats it like a playground.”
Lotte Anker is a Danish jazz saxophonist, and composer. With pianist Marilyn Crispell, she serves as one of the co-leaders of the Copenhagen Art Ensemble.

Marius Søfteland Neset is a Norwegian jazz musician (saxophone) living in Copenhagen. The Fred Frith Trio is a San Francisco Bay Area based experimental music and free improvising group featuring Fred Frith, Jason Hoopes and Jordan Glenn.
