Kalistat Lund (born 8 May 1959) is a Greenlandic politician affiliated with Inuit Ataqatigiit and previously Siumut.

Early life and education

Lund was born on 8 May 1959, [1] the son of sheep farmer Christian Adolf “Dolfe” Lund (1912–2010) and his wife Marie-Katrine Lund. Through his father he is a grandson of poet Henrik Lund (1875–1948) and his wife Karoline Malene Justine Haldora Egede (1877–1979). His grandmother and father are among the oldest Greenlanders ever. His older sister is Augusta Salling (* 1954). Lund attended the Folkeskole in Qassiarsuk from 1966. He then spent a year in Denmark and then attended secondary school in Narsaq until 1978, before taking the higher preparatory exam in Nuuk in 1980. He then worked as an assistant at Narsarsuaq Airport, where he came into contact with aviation. In 1982 he began training as an aircraft mechanic, which he completed in 1986. In 1988, he completed training to become a pilot. From 1991 to 2020, he worked as a helicopter pilot. [2] [1]

Political career

Kalistat Lund became a member of Siumut in 1978. [2] From 1997 to 2001, he was mayor of Narsaq Municipality. [1] He ran for the first time nationally in the 2002 parliamentary election and achieved third place in the Siumut, from where he sat in the Inatsisartut for a while in 2003 and from April 2004 before leaving in April 2005 because Jørgen Wæver Johansen took his parliamentary seat. [3] He was also chairman of the Selvstyre Commission, but had to resign because he was unable to win a seat in the 2005 parliamentary election. [4] From his sixth place, he was a member of parliament for one day in January 2008. In the 2008 local elections, he elected to the council of the new municipality of Kujalleq. [5] In 2013, he left the Siumut and became a member of the Inuit Ataqatigiit. [6] For this, he entered Inatsisartut in the parliamentary elections in the same year and was able to defend his seat in the 2014 election. [5] He resigned from parliament in April 2017 to concentrate on his job as a helicopter pilot. As a result, he no longer ran in 2018. After retiring from his career as a pilot in 2020, he ran in the 2021 parliamentary election and was re-elected to Inatsisartut and subsequently appointed Minister of Agriculture, Self-Sufficiency, Energy and Environment in the First Egede cabinet. [7] In April 2022, he was given the same portfolios in the Second Egede cabinet. [8]

Lund has three children with his wife Ivalo Egede Lund. [1]

An autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland is a parliamentary representative democratic territory, in which the premier leads the cabinet, and of a multi-party system.

The Inuit Party was a separatist party in Greenland, formed by dissidents from the then-governing Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA). The party was opposed to the so-called big-scale law, and wanted a referendum on the law. Mette Lynge represented the party in the Naalakkersuisut (Government) and was minister for dwellings, nature and environment. At the 2014 Greenlandic general election, the party did not win any seats in parliament.

General elections were held in Greenland on 24 April 2018, electing all 31 members of Parliament. The elections were required to be held no later than 26 November 2018, four years after the previous elections on 27 November 2014, but Prime Minister Kim Kielsen chose to call the elections seven months early. His Siumut party remained the largest in Parliament, but lost two seats, whilst Inuit Ataqatigiit, the second-largest party, lost three seats. The smaller Democrats and Partii Naleraq gained seats, with the newly formed Cooperation Party and Nunatta Qitornai parties both entering Parliament.

Aki-Matilda Tilia Ditte Høegh-Dam is a Danish-Greenlandic politician, who is a member of the Folketing for the Siumut political party. She was elected into parliament at the 2019 Danish general election, entering parliament at 22 years old, becoming its youngest member.

Snap general elections were held in Greenland on 6 April 2021 alongside local elections. Inuit Ataqatigiit emerged as the largest party, winning 12 of the 31 seats in the Inatsisartut. The governing Siumut party finished second with 10 seats.

Laura Tàunâjik Uitsatikitseq is a Greenlandic politician. She was a Siumut member of the Inatsisartut from 2014 to 2020, when she resigned to care for her children. From 2017 onward, she was a member of the municipal council for Sermersooq. Her work included advocacy for victims of domestic violence.

Sofia Johanna Geisler is a Greenlandic politician and journalist.

The spiral case is an ongoing investigation into a birth control campaign by the Danish government in Greenland, primarily during the 1960s and 1970s. Danish doctors placed intrauterine devices in thousands of Greenlandic Inuit girls and women, often without consent and under the direction of Danish government officials. The program was created to control Greenland's birth rate.

Aqqaluaq Biilmann Egede is a Greenlandic politician from Inuit Ataqatigiit. He has been minister for raw materials and justice since April 2022, and he had previously been minister of finance and taxes (2016-2018) and minister of fisheries and prisoners (2021-2022).
