Kalisto Entertainment was a French video game development company founded by Nicolas Gaume at age 19. They are mostly known for developing Fury of the Furries and the Nightmare Creatures series.

The company began as Atreid Concept in 1990 [1] and later created the distribution label Kalisto in 1992, which became Kalisto Entertainment's namesake. In late 1993, Atreid Concept became part of Mindscape Inc. as Mindscape Bordeaux. Nicolas Gaume bought Mindscape Bordeaux back in 1996, and renamed the company Kalisto Entertainment. [1] [2] In 2000, it expanded operations when the company acquired Texas-based developer Daylight Productions, and renamed itself to Kalisto Entertainment USA. [3] [4]

Kalisto Entertainment declared bankruptcy in 2002 (same time as the Dot-com bubble), and company officials were found without fault by a criminal court in 2006. Employers of the U.S. office went on to start up a new company Big Sky Interactive, which was later blacklisted by THQ and later shut down in 2003. Civil trials are still under way.[ when? ] Nicolas Gaume was condemned to pay 200,000 euros by the French Stock Market Authority for repeated misinformation of his stockholders.[ citation needed ]

Mindscape was a video game developer and publisher. The company was founded by Roger Buoy in October 1983 in Northbrook, Illinois, originally as part of SFN Companies until a management buyout was completed in 1987. Mindscape went public in 1988 and was acquired in 1990 by The Software Toolworks, eyeing Mindscape's Nintendo license. When Toolworks was acquired by Pearson plc in 1994, Mindscape became the primary identity for the development group. Mindscape was then sold to The Learning Company in 1998 and bought out by Jean-Pierre Nordman in 2001, becoming headquartered in Boulogne-Billancourt, France. Following the poor performance of its products, Mindscape exited the video game industry in August 2011. Notable titles released by Mindscape include the MacVenture series, Balance of Power, Moonstone: A Hard Days Knight, Legend, Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat, Warhammer: Dark Omen and Lego Island.

Taking the role of the titular unnamed character rescuing his bride from a monstrous suitor's schemes, gameplay follows the Prince as he explores environments, platforming and solving puzzles while engaging in combat scenarios.

Chessmaster is a chess video game series, currently owned and developed by Ubisoft. It is the best-selling chess video game series, with more than five million units sold as of 2002. The same cover art image featuring Will Hare was used from Chessmaster 2000 to Chessmaster 9000.

Nightmare Creatures is a 1997 survival horror video game developed by Kalisto Entertainment for PlayStation, Windows, and Nintendo 64. A sequel, Nightmare Creatures II, was released three years later. A mobile phone version of Nightmare Creatures was developed and published by Gameloft in 2003. A second sequel, Nightmare Creatures III: Angel of Darkness, was cancelled in 2004.

Asobo Studio SAS is a French video game developer based in Bordeaux and founded in 2002. The studio is most known for developing video game adaptations of several Pixar movies, A Plague Tale: Innocence, and the 2020 and 2024 versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator. To develop most of their games, they use their own game engine called Zouna, which was originally developed in the 1990s by some of their own employees who used to work at Kalisto Entertainment. It was later further developed by Asobo. The studio's name is derived from the Japanese word "asobō" (遊ぼう) that means "let's play".

Super Farm is a party video game with a farmyard theme developed by Asobo Studio and published by Ignition Entertainment for the PlayStation 2. Originally developed by Kalisto Entertainment, the developers of the game purchased the rights for the game after the company's dissolution and founded Asobo Studio. The game was re-released for Windows 8 in 2013 to commemorate its 10th anniversary.

Nicolas Gaume is a French entrepreneur and video games creator. In May 2009 he became the CEO of Mimesis Republic and president of the French National Union of Video Games. He is also known for being the founder of Kalisto Entertainment, and was the head of the company between 1990 and 2002. Gaume is the son of one of the hoteliers of Arcachon, and is the great-grandson of Louis Gaume, a real estate developer known for developing the Pyla in 1920. Nicolas is married with two kids.

<i>Bubsy in Fractured Furry Tales</i> 1994 platform video game

Bubsy in: Fractured Furry Tales is a platform video game developed by Imagitec Design and published by Atari Corporation for the Atari Jaguar in North America in December 1994, and Europe in January 1995. The third entry in the Bubsy series, the plot follows the titular character, who ventures through a realm of fairy tales to restore order and protect children all over the world from creatures and antagonists of corrupted fairy tales, which appeared after Mother Goose was captured by Hansel and Gretel.
