An information system (IS) is a formal, sociotechnical, organizational system designed to collect, process, store, and distribute information. From a sociotechnical perspective, information systems are composed by four components: task, people, structure, and technology. Information systems can be defined as an integration of components for collection, storage and processing of data of which the data is used to provide information, contribute to knowledge as well as digital products that facilitate decision making.
A concept of design science was introduced in 1957 by R. Buckminster Fuller who defined it as a systematic form of designing. He expanded on this concept in his World Design Science Decade proposal to the International Union of Architects in 1961. The term was later used by S. A. Gregory in the 1965 'The Design Method' Conference where he drew the distinction between scientific method and design method. Gregory was clear in his view that design was not a science and that design science referred to the scientific study of design. Herbert Simon in his 1968 Karl Taylor Compton lectures used and popularized these terms in his argument for the scientific study of the artificial. Over the intervening period the two uses of the term have co-mingled to the point where design science may have both meanings: a science of design and design as a science.
The Association for Information Systems (AIS) is an international, not-for-profit, professional association for scholars of information systems that was established in 1994. The association publishes journals, organizes conferences, and provides a forum for information systems professors and managers. It has members in more than 100 countries.
The language/action perspective "takes language as the primary dimension of human cooperative activity," applied not just in person-to-person direct (face-to-face) interactions, but also in the design of systems mediated by information and communication technology. The perspective was developed in the joint authorship of Understanding Computers and Cognition by Fernando Flores and Terry Winograd in 1987.
The Journal of the Association for Information Systems (JAIS) is a top-tier peer-reviewed scientific journal that covers research in the areas of information systems and technology. It is an official journal of the Association for Information Systems and published electronically. The journal was established in 2000 and is abstracted and indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Current Contents/Social & Behavioral Sciences. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2018 impact factor of 3.103.
A Master of Science in Information Technology is a master's degree in the field of information technology awarded by universities in many countries or a person holding such a degree. The MSIT degree is designed for those managing information technology, especially the information systems development process. The MSIT degree is functionally equivalent to a Master of Information Systems Management, which is one of several specialized master's degree programs recognized by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The IRIS Association is a non-profit organization aiming to promote research and research education in the use, development, and management of information systems (IS) in the Nordic region, and making that research known in the international research community and among practitioners. The Association was formed around the annual IRIS conference which has run since 1978. The IRIS Association was formally registered in 1997. The IRIS Association also represents the Scandinavian chapter of the Association for Information Systems (AIS) serving AIS members in the Nordic region.
Varun Grover is an American Information systems researcher, who is the George & Boyce Billingsley Endowed Chair and distinguished professor at the Walton School of Business, University of Arkansas. From 2002-17, he was the William S. Lee Distinguished Professor of Information Systems at Clemson University, where he taught doctoral seminars on methods and information systems. He is consistently in the top 3 IS researchers in the world. He has an h-index of 100, among the top 5 in his field Grover has around 52,000 citations in Google Scholar and over 13,900 citations in Web of Science.
John Leslie King is a W.W. Bishop Professor at the University of Michigan School of Information. His main works deal with computerization in the public sector and municipalities, as well as other organizations. He has also worked on privacy issues and some of the primary computerization projects such as project SAGE. He is the author of Information systems: the state of the field, published by Wiley in 2006, which, according to WorldCat, is held in 126 libraries. He is a former editor-in-chief of Information Systems Research.
Robert D. Galliers is Bentley University’s Distinguished Professor Emeritus having previously served as Provost 2002-2009. Previously, he held professorships at the London School of Economics (LSE), Warwick Business School, and Curtin University, Western Australia. He has been an Associate Director/Senior Advisor for EFMD Quality Services, Belgium since 2018. He has held a number of visiting professorships internationally(including at the Australian School of Business, University of New South Wales; Hong Kong City and Hong Kong Polytechnic Universities; University of St Gallen, Switzerland; University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa; National University of Singapore; the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management, Belgium). He serves on various university advisory boards. He is the founding editor-in-chief of The Journal of Strategic Information Systems, which he led from 1991 to December 2018. Bob Galliers is a Fellow of the British Computer Society, the Royal Society of Arts, and the Association for Information Systems, of which he was President in 1999. He received the Association for Information Systems LEO Award for exceptional lifetime achievement in 2012 and an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Turku University, Finland in 1995. Additionally, he holds an AB cum laude in Economics, Harvard University, MA with distinction in Management Systems, Lancaster University, and PhD, LSE. Bob Galliers has published widely in leading Information Systems and Management journals such as MIS Quarterly, the Journal of Management Studies, Long Range Planning, Infromation Systems Journal and the Journal of Management Information Systems.
Eckhard D. Falkenberg is a German scientist and Professor Emeritus of Information Systems at the Radboud University Nijmegen. He is known for his contributions in the fields of information modelling, especially object-role modeling, and the conceptual foundations of information systems.
Ping Zhang is an American scholar in information systems and human–computer interaction. She is notable for her work on establishing the human–computer interaction community inside the information systems field, bridging various camps of human–computer interaction research and exploring intellectual characteristics of the information field. She co-authored with Dov Te’eni and Jane Carey the first HCI textbook for non-computer science students.
John Mylopoulos is a Greek-Canadian computer scientist, Professor at the University of Toronto, Canada, and at the University of Trento, Italy. He is known for his work in the field of conceptual modeling, specifically the development an agent-oriented software development methodology. called TROPOS.
Arun Rai is an Indian-born American scientist. Arun Rai is a permanent Regent's Professor at the Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University and holds J. Mack Robinson Chair of IT-Enabled Process Innovation and Supply Chains and the Harkins Chair of Information Systems. He served as an Editor-in-chief of Management Information Systems Quarterly (MISQ) for five years between 2016 and 2020. He was the Founding President of the Association for Information Systems, co-founder of the International Conference on Information Systems, and the founder of the America's Conference on Information Systems. He has an h-index of 77 when including all of the fields in which he has published according to Google Scholar.
Rudolf A. (Rudy) Hirschheim is the Ourso Family Distinguished Professor of Information Systems in the E.J. Ourso College of Business at Louisiana State University. Hirschheim is a top-ranking information systems researcher, notable for his research on information systems development and outsourcing.
