Karl-Robin Sauerland (born 14 April 1977) is an Anglo-German boxing promoter and the Global Head of Boxing at Wasserman. [1] Sauerland has been the promoter for many British boxers including David Haye, Chris Eubank Jr and Derek Chisora. [1] [2]
Sauerland was born in Wuppertal, Germany but grew up in London, England. [3] He is the son of Wilfried Sauerland, a German International Hall of Fame boxing promoter. [3]
Sauerland began his career as an intern at International Management Group, a sports rights agency, where he handled the commercial rights for around 300 footballers including Zlatan Ibrahimović, Teddy Sheringham and Paolo Maldini. [3]
In 2003, Sauerland launched his own sports agency, Kentaro, which went on to acquire the broadcast rights to the Greek football team ahead of its UEFA Euro 2004 win and represent the Brazilian football team. [3] [4]
In 2008, Sauerland joined Sauerland Event, the boxing promotion company founded by his father Wilifred Sauerland. [3]
In 2009, Sauerland launched the Super Six World Boxing Classic, which saw the six best super middleweights compete against each other in a single tournament. [5] [6] It was covered by US television channel Showtime and saw Andre Ward beat Carl Froch in the final to unify the WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine titles. [6] [7]
In July 2011, Sauerland promoted the world heavyweight title fight between David Haye and Wladimir Klitschko. [8] [9]
In March 2017, Sauerland was appointed Chief Boxing Officer at the Swiss company Comosa AG, where he launched the World Boxing Super Series. [10] [11] Described as the ‘Champions League of boxing’, the tournament launched with $38 million in prize money. [5] The first season culminated in Oleksandr Usyk becoming undisputed cruiserweight world champion and Callum Smith becoming unified super middleweight champion. [12]
In March 2021, Wasserman acquired Sauerland's promotion firm Team Sauerland to create Wasserman Boxing. [1] [13] Sauerland and his brother Nisse were appointed heads of global boxing. [13] Since launch, Wasserman Boxing has promoted fights on Sky Sports, Sky Sports Box Office, DAZN and Channel 5. [14] [15]
In 2022, Wasserman Boxing, KSI and Proper Loud launched Misfits Boxing, a crossover boxing promotion where celebrities and influencers compete in the boxing ring, including Logan Paul, Tommy Fury and Dillon Danis. [15] In January 2023, Misfits Boxing signed a five-year deal with DAZN to broadcast all Misfits Boxing events. [16]
Sauerland lives in London and supports Tottenham Hotspur F.C. [17] Sauerland has a brother, Nisse Sauerland, who is the Managing Executive of Global Boxing at Wasserman. [13]
Wladimir Klitschko is a Ukrainian former professional boxer who competed from 1996 to 2017. He held the world heavyweight championship twice, including the unified WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, and Ring magazine titles. A strategic and intelligent boxer, Klitschko is considered to be one of the greatest heavyweight champions of all time. He was known for his exceptional knockout power, using a strong jab, straight right hand and left hook, quick hand speed, great physical strength which he employed when clinching opponents, and his athletic footwork and mobility, unusual for boxers of his size.
Alexander Vladimirovich "Sasha" Povetkin is a Russian former professional boxer who competed from 2005 to 2021. David Deron Haye is a British former professional boxer who competed between 2002 and 2018. He held multiple world championships in two weight classes, and was the first British boxer to reach the final of the World Amateur Boxing Championships, where he won a silver medal in 2001.
Edward John Hearn is a British sports promoter and the chairman of Matchroom Sport and Professional Darts Corporation. Hearn has promoted many world champion boxers through Matchroom, including Anthony Joshua, Canelo Álvarez, Gennady Golovkin, Vasyl Lomachenko, Katie Taylor and many others. He is the son of promoter Barry Hearn, the founder of Matchroom Sport. As of 2022, Hearn has been a senior mentor at the Garth Crooks Team of the Week Leadership Academy for Outstanding Young Men and Ladies.
Wilfried Sauerland is a German boxing promoter and manager. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2010.
Kubrat Venkov Pulev is a Bulgarian professional boxer. He has challenged once for the IBF and the Ring magazine heavyweight titles in 2014, and once for the unified heavyweight title in 2020. He won the WBA International heavyweight title in 2024. At regional level, he has held multiple heavyweight championships, including the European title twice between 2012 and 2016. As an amateur, he won multiple medals at international tournaments, including gold at the 2008 European Championships and bronze at the 2005 World Championships, all in the super-heavyweight division. He has held the undisputed championship in two weight classes, at cruiserweight and heavyweight, and reigned as the undisputed world heavyweight champion from May to June 2024. He has also held the International Boxing Organization (IBO) title since 2021, and the Ring magazine title since 2022.
Anthony Lewis Bellew is an English former professional boxer who competed from 2007 to 2018, and has since worked as a boxing analyst and commentator. He held the WBC cruiserweight title from 2016 to 2017. At regional level, he held the British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight titles between 2010 and 2014, the European cruiserweight title from 2015 to 2016. As an amateur, he is a three-time ABA heavyweight champion. He portrayed antagonist boxer Ricky Conlan in the films Creed and Creed III.
Derek Chisora is a Zimbabwean-British professional boxer. He has challenged twice for the WBC heavyweight title in 2012 and 2022. At regional level, he has held multiple heavyweight championships, including the British and Commonwealth titles from 2010 to 2011, and the European title from 2013 to 2014. As an amateur, he won the ABA super-heavyweight title in 2006.
George Groves is a British former professional boxer who competed from 2008 to 2018. He held the WBA (Super) super-middleweight title from 2017 to 2018. At regional level, he held multiple super-middleweight titles, including the European, British, and Commonwealth titles between 2010 and 2014. As an amateur, Groves won the ABA middleweight title twice in 2007 and 2008.
