Kama La Mackerel is a Mauritian-Canadian multidisciplinary artist, activist, translator, and community organizer who resides in Montreal, Quebec. [1] Their artistic practice moves between theatre, dance, spoken word and written poetry, watercolours, photography, performance, sculpture and installation. [2] [3] Working across multiple disciplines, La Mackerel's work explores their identity as a trans femme of colour who reaches back beyond the immediate constraints of the colonial circumstances of their life to the spiritual ancestral lineages of queer femmes. [4]
La Mackerel was born in Pamplemousses, Mauritius where they grew up in a Hindu and Catholic family. [5] [6] The first of their family to attend university, at the age of eighteen, they moved to India to pursue a Bachelor in Literature and Cultural Studies at the University of Pune, India. [7] While in India they also studied and trained in contemporary dance and Kathak, the latter under the mentorship of Nandkishore Kapote. In 2008 they immigrated to Canada where they completed a Master's degree in Theory, Culture and Politics at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario. [8] [9] In 2011 they moved to Montreal, where they actively began to pursue their artistic interests. [10]
La Mackerel's experience of not finding queer community spaces that were hospitable to trans people of colour, led them to create community events and spaces that center 2SLGBTQ+ people. [11] [12]
In 2013, responding to the lack of queer-friendly open mic spaces in Montreal, La Mackerel founded Gender B(l)ender, a monthly open mic/cabaret event held on the last Friday of every month. Venues included at Café l’Artère and librairie L’Euguélionne. [13] [12] Over a 5 year period La Mackerel organized and hosted 40 editions of the event which saw over 600 performances. [14] Performers included Asher Lionheart, Iyan Hayadi, Jespa Jacob Smith, Roxane Nadeau, Kim Ninkuru, Tranna Wintour, Valerie Bah, Kai Cheng Thom. [15] [16]
Running for four years between 2012 and 2016, the Self-Love Cabaret was an anti-valentine, artistic event which sought to challenge the dominant, heteronormative and consumerist holiday of coupledom: Valentine's Day by showcasing creative expressions of self-love. [17]
Curated and facilitated by La Mackerel, this event brought together six trans women of colour artists: Arielle Twist, Kai Cheng Thom, Kim Ninkuru, Adri Almeida, Gwen Benaway and La Mackerel. [18]
Part of McGill University's Black History Month events, Speak B(l)ack was hosted by La Mackerel and saw performers such as Stephanie Lawrence, Kim Ninkuru, and Shanice Nicole. [19]
While La Mackerel is most known for their debut poetry collection ZOM-FAM, their creative practice moves between dance, theatre, photography, sculpture, textiles, digital arts and video. La Mackerel is a self-taught artist and their practice emerges from a need to survive and find methods for navigating patriarchal colonial violence, and DIY grassroots cultural practices like zine-making, YouTube tutorials, open mic nights. [20] Major projects include From Thick Skin to Femme Armour, Breaking the Promise of Tropical Emptiness, 'Race' is a Drag!, My Body is the Ocean, Bois d'Ébène. [21] [22] [23]
Through a series of impromptu public performances, during the summer of 2012, La Mackerel produced 'Race' is a Drag! - a series of photographs that document the artist through their process of reclaiming public space. Most notable is the way the photographs capture the reactions of passersby whose gaze carries heterosexist and racist microaggressions trans women regularly experience. [24]
From Thick Skin to Femme Armour is a extended multidisciplinary research art project which honours trans women and femme of colour resistance and resilience. The project was toured in Europe in 2016 as a spoken word solo show. [25] The project involves watercolours, textiles with text, photographs, video and a series of wearable objects. [26] [23]
In this series of fifteen photographs, taken by South-African writer and scholar Nedine Moonsamy, La Mackerel challenges the way postcards contribute to colonial framing of tropical spaces as empty lands to colonize. [10] The artist poses their body against scenic Mauritian vistas, reinscribing their trans body onto their native island. [27]
In 2020 La Mackerel published their debut poetry collection ZOM-FAM with Metonymy Press to wide acclaim. [28] The title is a Mauritian Kreol term denoting "man-woman." [29] The work consists of eight poems which were originally composed as spoken word pieces that eventually became the material of a solo stage performance. The decision to move from spoken word to theatrical stage performance was prompted by a desire to create more texture in the work through movement, ritual and embodiment. As the poems migrated from stage to page, La Mackerel carried the stage movement over into the written poetry by using the page as a stage and allowing the words to break with traditional poem stanzas and envisioning the words as the body and the page as the stage. [30] Written in Canada, the poems explore the artist's experience of growing up on the island of Mauritius, in particular their relationship to land, water, family, language, and gender within, and in resistance to, the ideological and material framing of the island's colonial history. While written primarily in English, the poems pay tribute to the ancestral languages of the island, using Kreol and Mauritian colloquialisms which grow from the interrelations of English, Kreol, French, Bhopuri, Tamil, Hindi. The island and the ocean are situated at the heart of the work and lay the foundation for La Mackerel's poetic excavation of ancestral femme lineages connecting them to their femme spirituality. [30] In the summer of 2021 the book was launched in Mauritius and is hailed as the first published work of queer Mauritian literature. [31] The cover art of the book was made by Aun Li and Kai Yun Ching. [32]
La Mackerel has focused their translation on works by Canadian Anglophone trans women writers. [33] Titles they have translated include Vivek Shraya's I'm Afraid of Men (J'ai peur des hommes) and Kai Cheng Thom's From the Stars in the Sky to the Fish in the Sea (L'enfant de fourrure, de plumes, d'écailles, de feuilles et de paillettes) and Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars: A Dangerous Trans Girl's Confabulous Memoir (Fèms magnifiques et dangereuses: Mémoires affabulées d'une fille trans). Their 2023 translation of Valérie Bah's The Rage Letters was shortlisted for the 2024 Lambda Literary Award for Transgender Fiction. [36]
La Mackerel is a recipient of a Canada Council for the Arts Joseph S. Stauffer prize for emerging artists and was shortlisted as a finalist for the Dayne Ogilvie Prize for LGBTQ Canadian writers in 2021. [37] [38]
LGBTQ slang, LGBTQ speak, queer slang, or gay slang is a set of English slang lexicon used predominantly among LGBTQ+ people. It has been used in various languages since the early 20th century as a means by which members of the LGBTQ+ community identify themselves and speak in code with brevity and speed to others. The acronym LGBT was popularized in the 1990s and stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender. It may refer to anyone who is non-heterosexual or non-cisgender, instead of exclusively to people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. To recognize this inclusion, a popular variant, LGBTQ, adds the letter Q for those who identify as queer or are questioning their sexual or gender identity.
Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha is a Canadian-American poet, writer, educator and social activist. Their writing and performance art focuses on documenting the stories of queer and trans people of color, abuse survivors, mixed-race people and diasporic South Asians and Sri Lankans. A central concern of their work is the interconnection of systems of colonialism, abuse and violence. They are also a writer and organizer within the disability justice movement.
The Iris Prize, established in 2007 by Berwyn Rowlands of The Festivals Company, is an international LGBTQ film prize and festival which is open to any film which is by, for, about or of interest to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or intersex audiences and which must have been completed within two years of the prize deadline.
Julia Michelle Serano is an American writer, musician, spoken-word performer, transgender and bisexual activist, and biologist. She is known for her transfeminist books, such as Whipping Girl (2007), Excluded (2013), and Outspoken (2016). She is also a public speaker who has given many talks at universities and conferences. Her writing is frequently featured in queer, feminist, and popular culture magazines.
The Edgy Women Festival was an annual festival of "short, highly physical works by women, often characterized by a transdisciplinary approach and politicized content." which ran for 23 years from 1994 to 2016. Presented by Studio 303, a dance and interdisciplinary-arts centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Edgy Women focuses on feminist perspectives with workshops and forums, performance events, and socializing. Studio 303's artistic and general manager Miriam Ginestier programmed Edgy Women from 1995 to 2014.
Fierté Montréal, also called Montreal Pride, is an annual LGBT pride festival in Montreal, Quebec. The event was founded in 2007 at the initiative of Montreal’s LGBTQ+ communities after the city's prior Pride festival, Divers/Cité, repositioned itself as a general arts and music festival.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer+(LGBTQ+)music is music that focuses on the experiences of gender and sexual minorities as a product of the broad gay liberation movement.
The Dayne Ogilvie Prize for LGBTQ Emerging Writers is a Canadian literary award, presented annually by the Writers' Trust of Canada to an emerging Canadian writer who is part of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer community. Originally presented as a general career achievement award for emerging writers that considered their overall body of work, since 2022 it has been presented to honor debut books.
Montréal, arts interculturels (MAI) is a multidisciplinary cultural organization of Montreal created in 1999. It is located on Jeanne-Mance Street. It opened in 1999, and exhibits contemporary art, dance, music, theatre, painting, sculpture, and video. The mission of MAI is to facilitate and initiate intercultural relations.
Sean Dorsey is a Canadian-American transgender and queer choreographer, dancer, writer and trans rights activist. He is widely recognized as the United States' first acclaimed transgender modern dance choreographer. Dorsey founded his San Francisco-based dance company Sean Dorsey Dance, which incorporates transgender and LGBTQ+ themes into all of their works. Dorsey is also the founder and artistic director of Fresh Meat Productions, a non-profit organization. Fresh Meat Productions creates and commissions new work, presents performing arts programs, conducts education and engagement, and advocates for justice and equity in the Arts. The organization hosts Fresh Meat Festival in San Francisco, an annual festival of transgender and queer performance.
Kai Cheng Thom is a Canadian writer and former social worker. Thom, a non-binary trans woman, has published four books, including the novel Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars: A Dangerous Trans Girl's Confabulous Memoir (2016), the poetry collection a place called No Homeland (2017), a children's book, From the Stars in The Sky to the Fish in the Sea (2017), and I Hope We Choose Love: A Trans Girl's Notes from the End of the World (2019), a book of essays centered on transformative justice.
Alok Vaid-Menon is an American writer, performance artist, and media personality. Vaid-Menon is gender non-conforming and transfeminine, and uses the singular they third person pronouns.
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted inequities experienced by marginalized populations, and has had a significant impact on the LGBT community. Gay pride events were cancelled or postponed worldwide. More than 220 gay pride celebrations around the world were canceled or postponed in 2020, and in response a Global Pride event was hosted online. LGBTQ+ people also tend to be more likely to have pre-existing health conditions, such as asthma, HIV/AIDS, cancer, or obesity, that would worsen their chances of survival if they became infected with COVID-19. They are also more likely to smoke.

Syrus Marcus Ware is a Canadian artist, activist and scholar. He lives and works in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and is an assistant professor in the school of the arts at McMaster University. He has worked since 2014 as faculty and as a designer for The Banff Centre. Ware is the inaugural artist-in-residence for Daniels Spectrum, a cultural centre in Toronto, and a founding member of Black Lives Matter Toronto. For 13 years, he was the coordinator of the Art Gallery of Ontario's youth program. During that time Ware oversaw the creation of the Free After Three program and the expansion of the youth program into a multi pronged offering.
Arielle Twist is a Nehiyaw (Cree) multidisciplinary artist and sex educator based in Halifax, Nova Scotia located in Canada. She is originally from George Gordon First Nation in Saskatchewan. and identifies as a Two-Spirit, transgender woman She was mentored in her early career by writer Kai Cheng Thom and has since published a collection of poems in 2019 in her book Disintegrate / Dissociate, began working as a sex educator at Venus Envy and become an MFA candidate at OCAD University Graduate Studies in the Interdisciplinary Art, Media and Design (IAMD) program. Twist has also expanded her artistry past poetry into visual and performance art. Over her time as an artist, Arielle Twist has had her work featured in Khyber Centre for the Arts, Toronto Media Arts Centre, La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse, Centre for Art Tapes, Art Gallery of Mississauga, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and Agnes Etherington Art Centre. Twist has also won the Indigenous Voices Award for English poetry and the Dayne Ogilvie Prize for emerging LGBTQ writers in 2020.
Fatima Jamal is an American filmmaker, model, writer, and interdisciplinary artist. A Black transgender woman who goes by the moniker "Fat Femme," Jamal is also an activist who speaks and makes art about social issues including racism, body positivity, and LGBTQ rights.
Queer Pride Inside is a Canadian television special, which aired June 24, 2020 on CBC Gem. Created by CBC Arts and Buddies in Bad Times as a response to the cancellation of Pride Toronto during the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada, it presented a video cabaret of performances by LGBTQ-identified Canadian musicians, actors and drag artists.
Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars: A Dangerous Trans Girl's Confabulous Memoir is a 2016 Canadian book by Kai Cheng Thom. A surrealist novel, it follows an unnamed transgender woman protagonist who leaves home at a young age to live on the Street of Miracles—where various sex work takes place—with other "femmes". After one of them is killed, others form a gang and begin to attack men on the street.
