Kamil Korucu (born 7 May 1953, Istanbul) is a Turkish judoka, national athlete, coach, and trainer.

Career

Korucu was born in Istanbul in 1953. He graduated top of his class from Haydarpaşa High School in 1971 and from Marmara University Sports Academy in 1979. He began judo in 1965. In 1969, at his first Turkish Judo Championship, he placed second in the 93 kg category. Between 1970 and 1980, he won multiple gold medals in this category at the Turkish championships.In 1971, he won a silver medal in the 93 kg division at the Mediterranean Games held in İzmir. The same year, he became champion in both 93 kg and open weight classes at the International Bosphorus Tournament in Istanbul. He also won first place in the same weight categories at the International Peace Tournament in Bursa. [1]

He served as the captain of the Turkish National Judo Team in 1971 and became the national team coach in 1977. He won a bronze medal in the +95 kg division at the 1979 Mediterranean Games. Korucu represented Turkey at the 1973 and 1979 World Judo Championships, as well as the 1973 European Judo Championships.Between 1980 and 1985, he competed for the SRC Viernheim club in Germany. In 1981, he took third place in the heavyweight division at the International Judo Tournament in Munich representing Germany's Volkswagen Judo Team. He also competed in Bundesliga club competitions for SRC Viernheim, Ziegelhausen, and Schriesheim. During this time, he notably defeated Rumen Bierla, the silver medalist of the Moscow Olympics, in the +90 kg division. After returning to Turkey in 1985, he founded the Academic Sports Center and worked as a trainer there for 27 years until 2012. He continues to contribute to Turkish sports as a consultant. [2]
