The Kandy Airport is a proposed domestic airport in the central city of Kandy in Kundasale, Sri Lanka, aimed at facilitating growth in the influx of tourists to the Central Province. Domestic operations from Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo are set begin with the new domestic carrier Cinnamon Air. [1] The development is part of a multi-million dollar scheme to rebrand Kandy as a city of global cultural importance.

Location

Proposed areas for construction were explored in December 2011, [2] with State Minister of Foreign Employment Promotion and Market Diversification Priyankara Jayaratne and Minister of Health Keheliya Rambukwella inspecting three possible sites: a 42-acre block of land of belonging to the Department of Agriculture, a 1,250 acre farmland belonging to the Peradeniya University, and a 250-acre block at Ambakote belonging to the Mahaweli Authority. A post-inspection media statement indicated that construction work would commence subsequent to the receipt of technical reports on the sites. On 5 August 2012, it was announced that Kundasale would most likely be the final location. [3]

In August 2018, the Cabinet of Ministers in Sri Lanka has given its approval to conduct a feasibility study to construct a domestic airport in Maberiyathenna, Digana in Kandy district. [4]

It is administered by Airport and Aviation Services Ltd and serves as the hub of SriLankan Airlines, the national carrier of Sri Lanka, and domestic carrier Cinnamon Air. The other airport serving the city of Colombo is Colombo International Airport, Ratmalana.

Jaffna International Airport, formerly known as Palaly Airport and Jaffna Airport, is an international airport serving northern Sri Lanka. It was also a military airbase known as Sri Lanka Air Force Palaly or SLAF Palaly. The airport is located in the town of Palaly near Kankesanthurai, 7 nautical miles north of the city of Jaffna. It is at an elevation of 10 m (34 ft) and has one runway designated 05/23 with an asphalt surface measuring 1,400 by 30 metres.

The Colombo Outer Circular Expressway is a highway in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It was opened in sections. The 29 km (18 mi) long outer circular road network links the Colombo - Matara Expressway with Colombo - Katunayake Expressway and the proposed Colombo - Kandy Expressway and will provide an orbital beltway to bypass the city of Colombo and reduce traffic congestion. New Goa International Airport, also known as Mopa International Airport and officially renamed as Manohar International Airport, is an international airport at Mopa in Pernem taluka, North Goa district in the state of Goa, India. It serves North Goa and the adjoining districts of Karnataka and Maharashtra, and as a second airport of Goa after Dabolim Airport in Dabolim. The airport is developed by GMR Goa International Airport Limited (GGIAL), a special purpose vehicle (SPV). It is built at a cost of 3,000 crore (US$380 million). The Moragolla Dam is a planned hydroelectric dam in Moragolla, Sri Lanka. The dam is to be 35 m (115 ft) high and is planned to create the 1,980,000 m3 (70,000,000 cu ft) Moragolla Reservoir with a maximum supply level at 548 m (1,798 ft) MSL. Upon completion, the Moragolla Power Station would have a gross installed capacity of 30 megawatts from two francis turbines, capable of generating approximately 85 GWh annually.

Dhalbhumgarh Airport is a proposed public airport, which will serve the city of Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, India. It will be built on a former World War II era airfield in Dhalbhumgarh in East Singhbhum district, located about 60 km (37 mi) from Jamshedpur. The Government of Jharkhand and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction of the airport on 24 January 2019. Under the MoU, a joint venture company would be set up to construct the airport. The project was initially expected to be completed by December 2020. Due to delays and the COVID-19 pandemic, the airport was expected to open by 2022, but the construction of the airport is yet to be started till date. However, in December 2022, Land acquisition for 3.5 km link road connecting to the airport has started.

New Chennai Greenfield International Airport is a proposed greenfield airport project to serve the city of Chennai, India. It will be built near Parandur of Kanchipuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It will work alongside Chennai International Airport. The proposed airport will be spread around 5,000 acres. The Government of Tamil Nadu has declared that Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) will lead the project. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) conducted surveys on various areas near Chennai for a new airport for the city. Initially, a site near Sriperumbudur was fixed for the airport. But due to delays and cost of the land, the government decided to set the new airport in Parandur. The airport will also boost trade from Chennai and neighbouring districts as it will have its own dedicated cargo terminal, leading to a rapid increase in the economic development of the state.
