Kanon Ara Begum (born 25 June 1964) [1] is a Ganatantri Party politician and a former Jatiya Sangsad member from a women's reserved seat. [2] [3] She was a member of the Chattogram Zila Parishad. [4]
Several politico-constitutional arrangements use reserved political positions,especially when endeavoring to ensure the rights of women,minorities or other segments of society,or preserving a political balance of power.
The Senate of Pakistan or Aiwān-e-BālāPākistān,constitutionally the House of the Federation,is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Pakistan. As of 2023,It has a maximum membership of 96,of which 92 are elected by the provincial legislatures using single transferable vote. Four represent the Federal Capital. Members sit for terms lasting six years,with half of the house up for election every three years. Unlike the National Assembly,the Senate is a continuing chamber and hence not subject to dissolution.
The National Assembly of Pakistan is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Pakistan,with the upper house being the Senate. As of 2023,the National Assembly has a maximum membership of 336,of which 266 are directly elected by an adult universal suffrage and a first-past-the-post system to represent their respective constituencies,while 60 are elected on reserved seats for women and religious minorities from all over the country. Members hold their seats for five years or until the house is dissolved by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister. The house convenes at the Parliament House,Red Zone,Islamabad.
The Parliament of Pakistan is the supreme legislative body of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. It is a bicameral federal legislature,composed of the President of Pakistan and two houses:the Senate and the National Assembly. The president,as head of the legislature,has the power to summon or prorogue either house of the Parliament. The president can dissolve the National Assembly,only on the Prime Minister's advice.
Bangladesh elects on national level a legislature with one house or chamber. The unicameral Jatiyo Sangshad,meaning national parliament,has 350 members of which 300 members are directly elected through a national election for a five-year term in single-seat constituencies while 50 memberships are reserved for the women who are selected by the ruling party or coalition. The Prime Minister is the head of the government. The president who is the head of the state is elected by the National Parliament. The president of Bangladesh is a ceremonial post and does not exercise any control over the running of the state.
Reservation is a system of affirmative action in India created during the British rule. Based on provisions in the Indian Constitution,it allows the Union Government and the States and Territories of India to set a percentage of reserved quotas or seats,in higher education admissions,employment,political bodies,etc.,for "socially and economically backward citizens".
General elections were held in India between 25 October 1951 and 21 February 1952,the first national elections after India attained independence in 1947. Voters elected the 489 members of the first Lok Sabha,the lower house of the Parliament of India. Elections to most of the state legislatures were held simultaneously.
In India,a number of political positions and university posts are held for specific groups of the population,including Scheduled Castes(SC) and Scheduled Tribes(ST),and women in some cases.
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 27 February 1991. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) emerged as the largest party in parliament,winning 140 of the 300 directly elected seats. The BNP formed a government with the support of the Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami and on 20 March Khaleda Zia was sworn in for her first term as Prime Minister.
The Provincial Assembly ofKhyber Pakhtunkhwa is a unicameral legislature of elected representatives of the Pakistani province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,which is located in Peshawar,the provincial capital. It was established under Article 106 of the Constitution of Pakistan,having a total of 145 seats,with 115 general seats,26 seats reserved for women and 4 reserved for non-Muslims.
Tehmina Daultana is a Pakistani politician who has been a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan since February 2024,and previously served in position five times between 1993 and 2018.
Samina Khalid Ghurki is a Pakistani politician who served as the Federal Minister for Social Welfare and Special Education from November 2008 until February 2011. She subsequently held the position of Federal Minister for Environment from February 2011 to June 2011. Previously she served as the Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunication of Pakistan from June 2013 to July 2017 in the third Sharif ministry and again from August 2017 to April 2018 in the Abbasi ministry. She had been a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from 2008 to May 2018 representing the Pakistan Muslim League (N). In the 2024 Pakistani Senate election,Anusha emerged victorious in the senate seats reserved for women.
Marriyum Aurangzeb is a Pakistani politician who currently serves as Senior Minister in the Government of Punjab,in office since March 2024.
Shaza Fatima Khawaja is a Pakistani politician who is the current Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunication,in office since 12 March 2024. She has been a Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan since June 2013 and previously served as Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Youth Affairs with the status of Minister of State.
Ramesh Kumar Vankwani is a Pakistani politician who had been a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan,from August 2018 till August 2023. But in 2022 he left PTI to join PPP. Previously he was member of the National Assembly from June 2013 to May 2018 and a member of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh from 2002 to 2007. He was considered a strongest candidate to contest General Elections 2024 from NA-241 Karachi on the ticket of PPP. However,he was not awarded the ticket and his nomination on the reserved seats in National Assembly was not liked by the ideological workers of PPP on the bases that he had been known changing political parties in the past two decades.
Hina Parvez Butt is a Pakistani politician who is the current Chairperson of the Punjab Women Protection Authority and a Member of the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab since 2013.
Naheed Ezaher Khan is a Bangladesh Awami League politician and a former state minister of cultural affairs. She is a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing a women's reserved seat.
