Kanon Catchings is an American basketball player for the BYU Cougars of the Big 12 Conference.

Early life and high school

Catchings grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and initially attended Brownsburg High School. [1] He averaged 17.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game as a junior. [2] After his junior year, Catchings opted to leave Brownsburg to join the Overtime Elite league as a non-professional player for team Cold Hearts in order to preserve his collegiate eligibility. [3] He averaged 14.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game during the regular season. [4]

Catchings was rated a four-star recruit and initially committed to play college basketball at Purdue during his sophomore year over offers from Butler, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio State, and Cincinnati. [5] After his senior year, he requested a release from his National Letter of Intent (NLI) and reopened his recruitment. [6] Catchings later committed to play at BYU after considering Florida State and NC State. [7]

College career

Catchings enrolled at Brigham Young University in June 2024 in order to take part in the Cougars' summer practices. [8]

Personal life

Catchings is the nephew of Naismith Hall of Famer Tamika Catchings. His mother, Tauja, played college basketball at Illinois and professionally overseas. [9] Catchings' grandfather, Harvey Catchings, played 11 seasons in the NBA. [10]

On September 10, 2021, the Big 12 Conference unanimously accepted BYU's application for membership, and BYU officially joined the conference for the 2023–24 season. The team is coached by Kevin Young.

He completed his senior season in the 2014–15 academic year for Homestead High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, who went on to win the first state championship in the school's history. Swanigan was named Indiana's Mr. Basketball and a McDonald's All-American.

The 2020–21 BYU Cougars men's basketball team represented Brigham Young University in the 2020–21 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. It was head coach Mark Pope's second season as BYU's head coach and the Cougars tenth season as members of the West Coast Conference (WCC). The Cougars played their home games at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah. They finished the season 20-7, 10-3 in WCC Play to finish in 2nd place. They beat Pepperdine in the semifinals of the WCC tournament before losing in the championship game to Gonzaga. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament where they lost in the First Round to UCLA.
