Kapalkundala is a 1981 Bengali drama film directed and produced by Pinaki Bhushan Mukherji. [1] [2] It starred Ranjit Mallick, Bhanu Bannerjee and Mahua Roy Chowdhury in lead roles. [3] [4] This was the fourth remake of Kapalakundala based on 1866 same name novel of Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay. [5] [6] [7]

Plot

Nabakumar, a youngman loses his way in the forest while returning from Gangasagar. A Tantric trapps him to sacrifice him before the goddess Kali. A lady Kapalkundala rescues Nabakumar. He married Kapalkundala and returned his village Saptagram. The Tantric plans to take revenge against both of them.

Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was an Indian novelist, poet, essayist and journalist. He was the author of the 1882 Bengali language novel Anandamath, which is one of the landmarks of modern Bengali and Indian literature. He was the composer of Vande Mataram, written in highly Sanskritised Bengali, personifying Bengal as a mother goddess and inspiring activists during the Indian Independence Movement. Devi Chaudhurani is a Bengali novel written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and published in 1884. It was later translated to English by Subodh Chunder Mitter. Following closely after Anandamath, Bankim Chandra renewed call for a resurgent India that fights against oppression of the British Empire with strength from within the common people, based on traditional Indian values of austerity, dedication and selflessness. It is another important novel in the history of Bengali and Indian literature. Since it fuelled the patriotic struggle for Indian independence from the British Empire, the novel was banned by the British. The ban was lifted later by the government of India after independence. In this novel, Bankim Chandra reinforced his belief that armed face-to-face conflict with the Royal Army is the only way to win independence.

Kapalkundala is a Bengali romance novel by Indian writer Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. Published in 1866, it is a story of a forest-dwelling girl named Kapalkundala, who fell in love with and married Nabakumar, a young gentleman from Saptagram, but eventually found that she is unable to adjust herself with the city life. Following the success of Chattopadhyay's first novel Durgeshnandini, he decided to write about a girl who is brought up in a remote forest by a Kapalika and never saw anyone but her foster-father. The story is set in Dariapur, Contai in modern-day Purba Medinipur district, Paschimbanga where Chattopadhyay served as a Deputy Magistrate and Deputy Collector.

Mahua Roy Choudhury was an Indian actress who is recognized for her work in Bengali cinema. She is considered to be one of the most successful actresses of Bengali Cinema. She received several awards including a Filmfare Award. She was posthumously conferred with the Best Actress Award for her role in Aadmi Aur Aurat (1984) at the 5th Damascus International Film Festival in 1987.

Kapalkundala is a 1933 Bengali social family film directed by Premankur Atorthy for New Theatres Ltd. Calcutta. The film starred Umasashi, Durgadas Bannerjee, Manoranjan Bhattacharya and Molina Devi. It based on Kapalkundala, a famous Bengali novel written by Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay in 1866. This was the second remake of Kapalakundala, the first being made in 1929 by Priyanath Ganguly. The film was made three more times: 1939, 1952, 1981. The film did well celebrating a run of twenty-five weeks.

Byomkesh was a 2014 Indian Bengali crime fiction television series based on the Bengali sleuth Byomkesh Bakshi created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. The series starred Gaurav Chakrabarty, Saugata Bandyopadhyay and Ridhima Ghosh as Byomkesh Bakshi, Ajit and Satyabati respectively. The series premiered on 20 November 2014 on Colors Bangla channel and ended on 14 November 2015. This series is re-runned on 4 March 2024. The first episode was narrated by Sabyasachi Chakrabarty.

Mithu Mukherjee is a former Indian actress who appeared in Hindi as well as Bengali cinema. She made her debut in a 1971 Bengali film Shesh Parba directed by Chitta Bose. She was catapulted to stardom after she had donned the role of Marjina in Dinen Gupta's Marjina Abdulla (1973) and sustained it with further roles in Bengali films such as Nishi Kanya (1973), Mouchak (1974), Swayamsiddha (1975), Hotel Snow Fox (1976), Bhagyachakra (1980) and Sandhi (1980). She made her Bollywood debut with Dulal Guha's Khaan Dost (1976). After her Dujane (1984) had tanked at the box office, she took a sabbatical of seven years and returned to silver screen with Chandra Barot's hugely successful commercial drama Ashrita (1990).

Ekti Raat is a 1956 Indian Bengali-language comedy film directed by Chitta Basu and produced by Harendranath Chattopadhyay based on, Bhimpalashree, a story of Bengali novelist Balai Chand Mukhopadhyay. Film starring Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen in lead role with Tulsi Chakraborty and Bhanu Banerjee. This film was released on 26 April 1956 in the banner of H.N.C. Productions. In the 1990s, a television series Manush, based on the same plot, aired. This film become successful at the box office.

Datta is a 1951 Bengali romantic drama film directed by Soumyen Mukhopadhyay and released under the banner of S. B. Production. The film is based on the novel with the same name written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. The film was remade twice: in 1976 and later in 2023.

It premiered on 2 December 2019 and will air on Bengali GEC Star Jalsha, 9:30 pm every day. It is produced by Raj Chakraborty and stars Soumi Chatterjee, Debojyoti Roychowdhury, Saunak Ray, Tumpa Paul & Sayak Chakraborty

Sonar Harin is a 1959 Bengali film directed by Mangal Chakravarty. This film was written by Rashbehari Lal. The production company for this film is National Pictures. It was distributed by S.K. Films. The music for the film was composed by Hemanta Mukherjee. The film stars Uttam Kumar, Kali Bannerjee Supriya Choudhury in lead and this is the first film that Supriya Devi appears as a leading heroine. Others Bhanu Banerjee, Chhabi Biswas and Tarun Kumar played in supporting roles.
