Karel van der Weide is a Dutch chess grandmaster and author.
In September 2006, he tied for 2nd–9th with Luke McShane, Stephen J. Gordon, Gawain Jones, Luis Galego, Daniel Gormally, Klaus Bischoff and Šarūnas Šulskis in the 2nd EU Individual Open Chess Championship in Liverpool. [1]
In January 2007, he won the 32nd Ciudad de Sevilla on tiebreaks over Daniel Cámpora. [2]
In June 2022, he held a simultaneous exhibition against 25 players at the Chess Club Vredeburg. He won 18 games, drew 4, and lost 3. [3]
He has written a number of chess books, including Een schaakleven in 100 partijen [4] and Schaken voor huisvrouwen. [5]

He has held the No. 1 position in the FIDE world chess rankings since 1 July 2011 and trails only Garry Kasparov in time spent as the highest-rated player in the world. His peak rating of 2882 is the highest in history. He also holds the record for the longest unbeaten streak at an elite level in classical chess at 125 games.
Karen Asrian was an Armenian chess player. Awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 1998, he was a three-time Armenian champion. Asrian was a member of the gold medal-winning Armenian team in the 37th Chess Olympiad.

Bassem Amin is an Egyptian chess grandmaster and medical doctor. He was awarded the Grandmaster title by FIDE in 2006. Amin is the highest rated Egyptian and African player and the only medical doctor to have a FIDE peak rating of 2700+. Amin has also won the African chess championship seven times; 2009, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2024.
Zhou Jianchao is a Chinese chess player. In 2006, he became China's 21st Grandmaster at the age of 17. Zhou competed in the FIDE World Cup in 2007, 2009 and 2015.

Klaus Bischoff is a German chess player who was awarded the Grandmaster title by FIDE in 1990.
Zahar Oleksandrovych Efimenko is a Ukrainian chess grandmaster. He was a member of the gold medal-winning Ukrainian team at the 2010 Chess Olympiad. Efimenko competed in the FIDE World Cup in 2005, 2009 and 2011.
Evgeniy Yuryevich Najer is a Russian chess grandmaster and the European champion of 2015. He is also one of the coaches of the Russian women's national team.
Luís Galego is a Portuguese chess grandmaster. He represented Portugal in ten Chess Olympiads, and achieved a top Elo rating of 2543, and was national champion five times, most recently in 2012.
