Karin Balzer was an East German hurdler who competed in the 80 m hurdles event at the 1960, 1964 and 1968 Olympics, and in the 100 m hurdles in 1972. She won a gold medal in 1964 and a bronze in 1972, while finishing fifth in 1968. During her career she set 37 world's best performances.

Heinrich Hartmann Wirz, better known as Henry Wirz, was a Swiss-American officer of the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Wirz was the commandant of the stockade of Camp Sumter, a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp near Andersonville, Georgia, where inhumane conditions led to a high mortality rate of Union detainees. After the war, Wirz was tried and executed for conspiracy and murder relating to his command of the camp, and was one of only two people convicted for war crimes during the American Civil War.

Garmin-Cervélo was an elite professional women's cycling team registered in Great Britain and racing on the UCI Women's Road World Cup circuit. The team was previously known was Cervélo-Lifeforce Pro Cycling Team, but in 2009, with the creation of the UCI Professional Continental team Cervélo TestTeam, the women's team changed names to match the men's team. When the men's Cervélo TestTeam merged with Garmin–Transitions for the 2011 season, the team changed names again, becoming Garmin-Cervélo to again match the men's team. In 2007, the team was known as Raleigh-Lifeforce-Creation and prior to 2007, the team was known as the Univega Pro Cycling Team.
The European Cross Country Championships is an annual international cross country running competition. Organised by the European Athletic Association, it is the area championships for the region and is held in December each year. The championships was inaugurated in 1994 in Alnwick and the venue for the championships changes each year.

Karin Melis Mey, née Karin Mey, is a South African-born Turkish female long jumper. She became a naturalised Turkish citizen in June 2008, and took the name Melis in addition to her birth name Karin Mey. The 172 cm tall athlete at 55 kg (121 lb) is a member of Fenerbahçe Athletics team, where she is coached by Charley Strohmenger.
Karin Krebs is a retired East German middle-distance runner. She won the 800 metres race at the 1968 European Indoor Games, but failed to reach the 800 m Olympic final the same year. She then focused on the 1500 m event and won it at the 1971 European Championships, setting a new world record at 4:09.6 minutes. She placed fourth at the 1972 Olympics, and her world record was broken earlier in July 1972 by the future Olympic gold medalist Lyudmila Bragina. Krebs had her last intentional success in 1974 when she won the silver medal over 1500 m at the European Indoor Championships.
The first SPAR European Team Championships took place on 20 and 21 June 2009. The track and field athletics tournament run by European Athletics was the successor of the old European Cup competition which was held annually until 2008. The Championships saw a number of new rules introduced, which were criticised by some athletes and observers.
Karin Tietze is a retired East German slalom canoeist who competed in the mid-1950s. She won two medals at the 1955 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships in Tacen with a gold in the folding K-1 team event and a silver in the folding K-1 event.
Erika Müller is a Swiss curler. She was born on May 16, 1950. She skipped her teams from Bern Egghölzli Curling Club and Wetzikon Curling Club to five Swiss Championship titles in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986 and 1988. With her teammates Barbara Meyer, Barbara Meier and Cristina Wirz, she was the winning team at the 1983 World Curling Championships in Moose Jaw, Canada. In the final game Switzerland defeated Norway by the score of 18:3, which - until today - is the highest score in the history of World Curling Championship finals. She also won a Bronze Medal at the World Curling Championships 1985 in Jönköping, Sweden. In 1983, she won a Bronze Medal at the European Curling Championships in Västeras, Sweden.
