Karla Moskowitz is a retired Associate Justice of the New York Appellate Division of the Supreme Court,First Judicial Department. [1]
She is a 1963 cum laude graduate of Alfred University and a 1966 graduate of Columbia Law School. [2]
Prior to joining the bench,she worked with the State Attorney General’s office,New York City Human Resources Administration,an arbitrator for the Small Claims Division of the Civil Court,an attorney in private practice and as an Administrative Law Judge for the New York State Department of Health. She subsequently served on the New York City Civil Court from 1982 to 1987. She was a New York Supreme Court Justice,from 1987 to 2008 and sat on the Commercial Division, [3] New York’s business court,from 2001 until her appointment to the Appellate Division in January 2008. She was originally appointed as an acting Supreme Court justice in 1987,then elected as a justice to the Supreme Court in 1991,and re-elected in 2005. Moskowitz was designated as a Justice for the Appellate Division,First Judicial Department in 2008 by Governor Eliot Spitzer. She retired from the Appellate Division in 2017. [1] [2] [4] [5]
In 2018,she was appointed a Special Master of the First Department’s pre-argument mediation program. [2]
She now serves as an arbitrator and mediator with NAM (National Arbitration and Mediation). [6]
Among other awards,in 2003,she received the Edith I. Spivack Award from the New York County Lawyers' Association's Women's Rights Committee;the Abigail Allen award from Alfred University (2004);the Joan L. Ellenbogen Founder’s Award of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York (1999);and the Women of Valor Award of the Women’s Medical Association of New York City (1995). In 2008,she has received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws from Alfred University. [1] [2] [4]
Moskowitz served as president of the New York State Association of Women Judges. She also served as president of the National Association of Women Judges. She was a founder and co-president of Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert (JALBCA),and remains on its board of directors. [7] [8] She is a charter member of the American College of Business Court Judges. From 2003 to 2005,she co-chaired the Summary Jury Trials Committee of the Jury Trial Project of the New York State Courts. She has been an executive committee member of the Commercial and Federal Litigation Section of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA),and chaired its appellate committee. She has been an executive committee member of the NYSBA's Trial Lawyers and co-chaired its dispute resolution committee. [2] [4] [9]
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York is the intermediate appellate court in New York State. Dana Anderson Fabe is an American lawyer,retired judge,and mediator. She served as a justice of the Alaska Supreme Court from 1996 to 2016,including three terms as the court's chief justice. She previously served as an Alaska trial court judge for nearly eight years,from 1988 to 1996. Heather A. Welch is an American judge on the Marion County,Indiana Superior Court,located in Indianapolis,Indiana. She was instrumental in developing Indiana's Commercial Courts,on which she served as one of its initial judges until her retirement. She has served as a judicial leader in Indiana and nationally,among other things being the incoming chair of the American Bar Association's Judicial Division in 2024,and has received numerous awards for her judicial service.

She has been a leader in the national community of specialized business court judges,and has been acknowledged with numerous awards for her work as a trial judge. Andler has been recognized for her service to at-risk children and youth.
Carolyn E. Demarest is a retired American judge who served in New York's state and local court systems for 33 years. This includes her role as justice of the trial level New York Supreme Court for Brooklyn,Kings County,where she served for 26 years,and was one of that court's original Commercial Division specialist business court judges.
Elizabeth Hazlitt Emerson is a retired American judge who served on the New York Supreme Court of Suffolk County for 28 years,21 of those years presiding in that court's Commercial Division,a specialized business court. She was instrumental in establishing the Suffolk County Commercial Division,and has played an important part in developing New York's Commercial Division statewide. She worked at prestigious New York law firms before being elected to the bench for two 14-year terms,and has been recognized and honored for her work as a judge and judicial administrator.
Nancy Lee Allf is a retired American judge,who served for 13 years on Nevada's Eighth Judicial District Court,located in Las Vegas,Clark County. As a lawyer,she was involved in the creation of Nevada's business courts,which she later served on for ten years as a judge. She received numerous awards for her judicial service and for her leadership as a lawyer,and has held many leadership positions in the legal community.
James M. Alexander is a retired American judge who served on Michigan's Sixth Judicial Circuit Court in Oakland County for 19 years. He served in the Family Court for his first nine years,and in the newly created Business Court for his last seven as one of its original judges,writing hundreds of business court legal opinions over that time. He has held significant leadership positions as a judge,and received numerous awards and honors for his public service.
