Karla Ruiz McFarland is a Mexican politician who served as the 28th mayor of Tijuana. [1] A member of the National Regeneration Movement,she is the first female mayor of Tijuana and the former Secretary of Municipal Education. [2]
Ruiz McFarland is the daughter of Guillermo Ruiz Hernández,the current Attorney General of Baja California. She attended Our Lady of Peace,a private Catholic high school in San Diego,and graduated from the Ibero-American University Tijuana with a bachelor's degree in Communications.
Before entering politics,she worked at marketing agencies and news outlets,including for TV Azteca and PSN. She also founded El Foro de Baja California,a newspaper specializing in Law,and served as Director of Public Relations at her family's law firm. [3] [4]
In 2019,she joined the municipal cabinet as head of the Municipal Education Secretariat.
Ruiz McFarland was appointed mayor of Tijuana on October 16,2020,after then-mayor Arturo González Cruz briefly stepped down to seek the state government candidacy for his Morena political party. Her term ended momentarily on November 5 when González resumed his mayoral duties while awaiting a decision on his nomination. On February 12,2021,she returned to the mayor's office after González's resignation. [5] She left the post on September 29. [6]
Jorge Hank Rhon is a Mexican businessman and owner of Mexico's largest sports betting company,Grupo Caliente. He served from December 2004 to February 2007 as the president of the municipality of Tijuana. He is the son of former Mexico City mayor Carlos Hank González and Guadalupe Rhon. The Hank family has alleged links to drug trafficking. He has been accused of money laundering,murder,arrested for possession of unlicensed arms and dealing in the trade of exotic animals.
The governor of Baja California represents the executive branch of the government of the state of Baja California,Mexico,per the state's constitution. The official title is "Free and Sovereign State of Baja California",and the position is democratically elected for a period of 6 years,and is not re-electable. From 1953 to 2019,the governor's term began November 1 of the year of the election and finishes October 31,six years later. To coincide with the federal elections,the law was changed,decreeing there would be an election in 2019,another in 2021,and yet another in 2024 before reverting to a six-year term.

Los Tucanes De Tijuana are a Mexican norteño band led by Mario Quintero Lara. The band was founded in Tijuana,Baja California in 1987. They,along with Los Tigres del Norte,were pioneers in playing their music in a rougher manner as opposed to the traditional norteño music of northeastern Mexico,subsequently influencing many other norteño artists from Mexico’s pacific states and giving that region of the country its signature norteño sound. During their career,Los Tucanes de Tijuana have garnered several awards and recognitions,including a Latin Grammy in 2012 for the album 365 días,five Grammy Award nominations,nine Lo Nuestro Awards nominations and multiple BMI Awards for Quintero as a composer. They are the first norteño music band to obtain an international film award by winning the Un Certain Regard Angel Film award at the Monaco International Film Festival for their participation in the documentary Los ilegales. In 2008,the group received a star on the Las Vegas Walk of Fame.

FotoFilm Tijuana is a festival that takes place annually in Tijuana,Baja California,Mexico. It is a photography and film festival and had over 22,000 attendees in 2017. Held in July at the Tijuana Cultural Center,the event is a showcase for Mexican and international filmmakers,photographers and performers. The festival comprises competitive sections for short films,and includes feature films and documentary films.
Narcos:Mexico is an American crime drama television series created and produced by Chris Brancato,Carlo Bernard,and Doug Miro that premiered on Netflix on November 16,2018. It was originally intended to be the fourth season of the Netflix series Narcos,but it was ultimately developed as a companion series.
