The Karlskrona Admiralty Church (Swedish : Karlskrona amiralitetskyrka) is a church in Karlskrona, Sweden. The church is also known as the Ulrica Pia in honor of Queen Ulrike Eleonora of Denmark, Queen consort of King Charles XI of Sweden ('pia' is the feminine form of the Latin 'pius' which means 'pious'). History

The church belongs to the Royal Karlskrona Admiralty Parish and is situated close to the Karlskrona naval base shipyard area. It is located near Vallgatan in the south east of the island of Trossö in the Karlskrona archipelago. [2]

The church was consecrated in 1685. It is made entirely of wood. Originally it could seat 4,000 making it Sweden's largest wooden church The interior is in a light bluish color while the exterior is in the traditional Falu red. Its shape is a squarish greek cross, with each cross arm measuring 20 metres (66 ft). In front of the main entrance stands the wooden figure of Rosenbom. [3] [4]

The church was listed as part of the Karlskrona naval base on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998. [5]

In front of the Karlskrona Admiralty Church, in Sweden, the popular wooden figure of Gubben Rosenbom has been standing since the mid 18th century. In 1956 the original was replaced by a copy and put in a safer place inside the church. The life-size figure is actually a poor box, which means, if you lift its hat, you can insert a coin for the poor.

Olof Rudolf Cederström was a Swedish naval commander. Cederström enlisted in the Swedish admiralty in 1779 and as captain, he conducted a raid against Rogervik. He distinguished himself in 1790 at the naval Battle of Reval and the Battle of Viborg Bay. During the following years he led ships against privateers in the North Sea. He was sent in 1801 to fight alongside the United States Navy in the Mediterranean during the First Barbary War. In 1808 his ships were sent to blockade Gotland in order to repel a Russian invasion. His last military action was against Denmark and France in 1813, when he helped Swedish forces capture Vorpommern. In 1815, he was appointed a minister but returned to the navy in 1818. He finally resigned in 1828.

The Ropewalk is a building on the island of Lindholmen in southeastern Sweden. It is located within the naval base in Karlskrona. Dating from 1692, the rope factory terminated production in 1960 but in 2006, after renovation, it was opened to the public with exhibitions and demonstrations of ropemaking. With a length of some 300 metres (980 ft), the Ropewalk is Sweden's longest wooden building.

Stumholmen is a small island to the east of Trossö in Karlskrona, Sweden. It is connected to the center of Karlskrona by the Bastionsgatan bridge. Formerly the property of the Navy, today it houses the National Naval Museum (Marinmuseum), one of Sweden's oldest founded in 1752, the Hyper Island educational complex, and several other historic buildings. The unusual Slup- och barkass- skjulet is noted for its remarkable roof while buildings on Laboratorieholmen once served as an isolation hospital when the town was struck with disease. Comprehensive restoration and renovation work has been undertaken since the 1990s, providing a variety of interesting sights for tourists as well as residential accommodation for senior citizens. Since 1998, the Naval City of Karlskrona, of which Stumholmen is a key component, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Trossö is an island in Blekinge County, southern Sweden. It is situated within the Karlskrona archipelago. The main road, Osterleden (E22), connects the island to the mainland. The city of Karlskrona is spread over 30 islands, the main one being Trossö where the city center is located. Landmarks on Trossö include the Karlskrona naval base and Stortorget, the large town square situated in the centre of the island at its highest point. The two churches in the square, Trinity Church and Fredrik Church, were both designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger, with features such as burnt orange stucco and colonnades made of grey stone. Trossö is included in Karlskrona's distinction as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Hedvig Eleonora Church was located in Karlskrona, Blekinge County, southern Sweden. It was situated at the corner of Drottninggatan/Östra Köpmangatan. Consecrated in 1685, it was the city's first parish church, and was built as a temporary wooden church in anticipation of a stone church which the king promised that the Crown would fund. The church was named after the then Queen Dowager Hedvig Eleonora of Holstein-Gottorp. It was in use from 1681 until 1744 when it was replaced by Fredrikskyrkan. The churchyard has been converted into a park.
