Karma is a 2015 Indian Tamil-language murder mystery film directed, produced and written by R. Arvind in his debut. The features two characters namely a police officer and a crime writer throughout the entirety of the film. [3] [4]

Production

The film is an experimental film and unlike other Tamil-language films does not have a heroine, multiple songs, or comedy tracks. [2] [3] In 2012, Arvind held a casting call for the lead actor before ultimately he himself decided to play both of the lead roles. [5]

Soundtrack

The soundtrack was composed by L. V. Ganesan and compromises of one song "Karma (Title Track)", which was written and sung by lyricist Vairamuthu. [1] For the song, Vairamuthu wrote ten new tirukkuṛaḷs. The song also marks his debut as a singer. [6]

Release

The film received a nomination at the Madrid International Film Festival in 2015 and is the first Tamil film to do so. [4] The film was released online on 16 September 2016 on paid subscription streaming platforms such as Amazon Video, iTunes, and Google Play by Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap. [1] [2] This film was promoted as the first Tamil film to be released online. [2] Although the film Ayynoorum Ayynthum (2016) was released online, it was released online for free. [3]

Vairamuthu Indian film lyricist, poet, and novelist

Vairamuthu Ramasamy is an Indian lyricist, poet, and novelist working in the Tamil film industry. He is a prominent figure in the Tamil literary world. A master's graduate from the Pachaiyappa's College in Chennai, he first worked as a translator, while also being a published poet. He entered the Tamil film industry in the year 1980, with the film Nizhalgal, an Ilaiyaraaja musical, directed by Bharathiraja. During the course of his 40-year film career, he has written over 7,500 songs and poems which have won him seven National Awards, the most for any Indian lyricist. He has also been honored with a Padma Shri, a Padma Bhushan and a Sahitya Akademi Award, for his abundant literary output.

Madhan Karky Indian lyricist

Madhan Karky Vairamuthu is an Indian lyricist, screenwriter, research associate, software engineer, and entrepreneur. A holder of a doctorate in computer science from the University of Queensland, Karky began his professional career as an assistant professor at the College of Engineering, Guindy, and soon after ventured into the Tamil film industry, working as a lyricist and dialogue writer. He resigned from his teaching profession in early 2013 and began working full-time in the film industry, while also launching the Karky Research Foundation (KaReFo), an educational research organization which primarily focuses on language computing and language literacy. He also founded the Mellinam Education, which develops educational games and story books designed to propagate learning among children, and DooPaaDoo, an online music platform which promotes independent music and serves a distributor for film soundtracks.
