The 2012 Karnataka video clip controversy, also referred to as Porngate, was a controversy in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly where two ministers of the state cabinet resigned over claims of inappropriate conduct. It is alleged that they viewed a pornographic video on a mobile device while the legislature was in session. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Incident

In February 2012, Spring Zouk, an international festival described as a rave party, was attended by mostly foreign tourists at Udupi beach on at St Mary's Islands. [6] The event is coordinated to increase tourism. [7] At this rave, a video of tourists at the event having sex in public was created [6] and the viewing of this video became the subject of controversy. [8]

At a session of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, a camera showed two cabinet ministers, J. Krishna Palemar, Laxman Savadi and C C Patil, allegedly watching pornographic clips on a mobile phone. [9] [10] The ministers said that the video was an investigation of the behavior of foreign tourists at the party on St. Mary's Islands, who were having sex in public and consuming drugs and alcohol at the rave organised by the state tourism department and others. [8]

Reactions

Political

On 8 February, all ministers offered resignation letters and the party accepted their resignations. [11] Former Karnataka chief minister and BJP party leader B. S. Yeddyurappa reprimanded all officials for their behavior. [12] Anna Hazare called for their imprisonment. [13]

Media

An Indian news source claimed that the international media attention of the event was on how the members of the party who were caught viewing the video were in a party which was especially condemning of this sort of behavior. [14]

The public sought information about this event using Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. [14] The hashtag "#porngate" was a top trending word on 8 February 2012 on social media site Twitter. [15]

Social

The All India Democratic Women's Association issued a statement that "the anti-women mindset of the former women and child development minister C C Patil, who has been a vocal advocate of dress codes for women, has been thoroughly exposed. The BJP is answerable for justifying and defending hypocrites who indulge in moral policing, while themselves violating all norms of decent behaviour." [16]

Jagadish Shivappa Shettar is an Indian politician, who served as the 15th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 2012 to 2013. He is currently serving as Member of Karnataka Legislative Council. He has subsequently served as Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He also served as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly during 2008–2009. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Earlier in 2023 he had joined the Indian National Congress, where he quit the BJP on being denied the MLA ticket in 2023. He represented Hubli-Dharwad Central Vidhan Sabha seat, which he resigned in 2023 before the elections. In March 2024, he was announced as the BJP candidate from the Belgaum Constituency for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections.

Udupi Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka a state in southern India. This constituency was created as part of the implementation of the delimitation of the parliamentary constituencies in 2008, based on the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission of India constituted in 2002. Krishna Palemar is a former member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Mangalore City North and a member of the Bhartiya Janata Party, who had served as Minister of Environment and Ports in the B. S. Yeddyurappa government and as Minister for Ports, Science and Technology in the D. V. Sadananda Gowda Government. He is a realtor, builder, businessman, and educationist.

Korgi Jayaprakash Hegde is an Indian politician who has been a Minister in the Government of Karnataka. He is the Chairman of the Karnataka Backward Class Commission. As Minister in charge of undivided Mangalore and Chikmagalur, in 1997, he is the reason for the creation of Udupi district, from undivided Mangalore and Udupi. He was also a Member of India's Parliament representing Udupi Chikmagalur.

Chandrakanthgowda Channappagowda Patil is an Indian politician who was served as the Minister of Public Works Department of Karnataka from 4 August 2021 to 13 May 2023. He is a member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Nargund, Karnataka. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who had served as Minister for Women and Child Welfare department, Government of Karnataka in the Sadananda Gowda Ministry. He was a member of the legislative assembly from Nargund from 2004 to 2013 and again was re-elected during 2018 assembly elections. He is currently serving as Minister for Mines and Geology from Commerce & Industries department and Ecology & Environment department in the B. S. Yediyurappa cabinet.

He was ex Deputy Leader of the House in Karnataka Legislative Council. He had served as the Minister for Cooperation in the Second B.S.Yeddurappa Ministry and D. V. Sadananda Gowda Government.
