Katharina Thoma (born 14 July 1975) is German opera stage director and academic teacher who has worked freelance in Germany and Europe.

Life and career

Thoma studied first piano and music pedagogy at the Musikhochschule Lübeck. [1] She began work as assistant to stage directors at the Staatstheater Kassel and the Oper Frankfurt, working with Richard Jones, Christof Loy and Keith Warner, among others. [2] She achieved a second prize at the 2007 European Camerata Nuova competition, and then directed Samuel Barber's Vanessa at the Malmö Opera. [2] She became recognised for including contemporary elements in classical works.

She has worked freelance from 2008, including at major houses in Europe such as the Royal Opera House in London, the Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg, the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm, the Folkoperan there, and the Gothenburg opera house. She directed at festivals including the Glyndebourne Festival and the Munich Biennale. [2] In Germany, she directed in Frankfurt and Kassel, at the Leipzig Opera, the Cologne Opera, the Opernhaus Dortmund, and the Staatstheater Karlsruhe. She staged works by Mozart, Wagner and Verdi. In 2024, she directed the first production in Frankfurt of Offenbach's Die Banditen , supplying a new translation into German. [3] [4] [5]

Thoma lectured scenic direction at the Hochschule für Musik Mainz from 2008 to 2012. She has been professor at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg from 2019 where she has directed the opera school. [2]

Christof Loy is a German stage director especially for opera, whose work received several awards. A freelance director, he has staged operas from Baroque to premieres of new works at major European opera houses and festivals. He is known for directing works by Mozart.

Hedwig Fassbender is a German operatic mezzo-soprano and academic voice teacher. She has appeared in leading roles at major European opera houses, including some soprano roles such as Wagner's Isolde and Sieglinde.

Britta Stallmeister is a German operatic soprano. A member of the Oper Frankfurt from 1998 to 2015, she has appeared in major European opera houses and international festivals. She has performed in premieres, and in recitals and recordings.

Christian Elsner is a German tenor in opera and concert, and an academic voice teacher at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe. He focused first on lied and oratorio, then entered the opera stage in roles such as Handel's Tabarco and Mozart's Pedrillo. From 2007, he also performed roles such as Wagner's Siegmund and at international opera houses and festivals.

Corinna von Rad is a German-American opera and theatre director.

Hildegard Uhrmacher, married name Hildegard Kronstein-Uhrmacher, is a German operatic soprano who appeared at European opera houses in coloratura soprano roles such as Mozart's Konstanze, but also in contemporary works including Marie in Bernd Alois Zimmermann's Die Soldaten. She was a professor of voice at the Musikhochschule Hannover and the Hochschule für Musik Detmold. Her 2006 autobiography is entitled Hilde, du schaffst das.

Giedrė Šlekytė is a Lithuanian conductor, who works in Europe with a focus on opera. After she was one of three conductors for the Young Conductor Award of the Salzburg Festival in 2015, she worked at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt for two seasons. She conducted Schreker's Die Gezeichneten at the Opernhaus Zürich, and Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites at the Oper Frankfurt in 2021.

Roland Böer is a German conductor with a focus on opera. He was artistic director of the Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte in Montepulciano from 2015 to 2020.

She has performed leading roles, especially breeches roles such as Cherubino in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Paolo in Mercadante's Francesca da Rimini and Fragoletto in Offenbach's Die Banditen.

Karsten Januschke is a German conductor in opera and concert who made an international career. He worked at the Oper Frankfurt from 2008 to 2015 and then turned to freelance work. He focused on Mozart operas, but has also conducted contemporary works such as the German premiere of Olga Neuwirth's Lost Highway.
