A town is a type of a human settlement. Towns are generally larger than villages and smaller than cities, though the criteria to distinguish between them vary considerably in different parts of the world.
Smolyan is a town and ski resort in the south of Bulgaria near the border with Greece. It is the administrative and industrial centre of the Smolyan Province. The town is built along the narrow valley of the Cherna ('black') and the Byala ('white') river in the central Rhodope Mountains. It is located at the foot of the mountain's highest peak Golyam Perelik (2191 m). Popular ski resorts of Pamporovo and Chepelare lie in the vicinity. As of June 2022 the town has a population of 30 689 inhabitants.
Spetses is an island in Attica, Greece. It is counted among the Saronic Islands group. Until 1948, it was part of the old prefecture of Argolis and Corinthia Prefecture, which is now split into Argolis and Corinthia. In ancient times, it was known as Pityussa.
Missolonghi or Mesolongi is a municipality of 32,048 people in western Greece. The town is the capital of Aetolia-Acarnania regional unit, and the seat of the municipality of Iera Polis Mesolongiou. Missolonghi is known as the site of a dramatic siege during the Greek War of Independence, and of the death of poet Lord Byron.
Oinountas is a former municipality in Laconia, Peloponnese, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Sparta, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 301.812 km2. The name originates from the Oinountas, a small river that traverses the municipality.
Vyronas is a suburban town and a municipality in the southeastern part of the Athens agglomeration, Greece. The town is named after George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron, the famous English poet and writer, who is a national hero of Greece. Formerly part of the municipality of Athens, Vyronas was created as a community in 1933, and became a municipality in 1934. The municipality has an area of 9.204 km2.
Athinaikos, officially known as Athinaikos AS FC, the Athenaic Athletic Association, is a Greek association football club based in the suburban town of Vyronas, located in the Athens agglomeration. The club is also referred to, unofficially, as Athinaikos Vyronas.
Vamos is a small town and former municipality in the Chania regional unit, Crete, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform "Kallikratis" it is a municipal unit, part of the municipality of Apokoronas, serving as its historical capital. It is situated on a small hill at an altitude of 190 metres above sea level, about 25 kilometres from Chania. In Vamos, one can find several restaurants, snack bars and shops in the village, as well as many public services, such as a fully equipped health center, schools, police station and the regional court for the regions of Apokoronas and Sfakia.
The municipalities of Greece are the lowest level of government within the organizational structure of the state. As of 2021, there are 332 municipalities, further divided into 1036 municipal units and 6136 communities. Thirteen administrative regions form the second-level unit of government. The regions consist of 74 regional units, which mostly correspond to the old prefectures. Regional units are then divided into municipalities. The new municipalities may be subdivided into municipal units, consisting of the pre-Kallikratis municipalities. These were further subdivided into municipal communities and local communities according to population, but are simply named communities since the entry into force of the Kleisthenis I Programme on 1 September 2019.
Lefkada City is a city and a former municipality on the island of Lefkada, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Lefkada, of which it is a municipal unit. It is the capital and main town of the island of Lefkada, located in the northern and northeastern part of the island. The city had a population of 9,253 inhabitants at the 2021 census. The municipal unit has a land area of 60.628 square kilometres (23.409 sq mi) and a population of 13,540 (2021).
Medeon is a former municipality in Aetolia-Acarnania, West Greece, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Aktio-Vonitsa, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 213.217 km2. Population 3,311 (2021). The seat of the municipality was in Katouna. Medeon was named after the nearby ancient city of Medeon.
Zitsa is a village and a municipality in the Ioannina regional unit, Epirus, Greece. The seat of the municipality is the village Eleousa. The municipality has an area of 565.566 km2, the municipal unit 65.868 km2, the community 29.169 km2.
Avia is a village and a former municipality in Messenia, Peloponnese, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality West Mani, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 179.828 km2. In 2011 its population was 281 for the village, 611 for the community and 2,246 for the municipal unit. The seat of the municipality was in Kampos. Avia is a popular tourist destination. It also has a large olive production. Avia is situated on the east coast of the Messenian Gulf, southeast of Kalamata, southwest of Sparta and northwest of Kardamyli.
Kastellia is a village in the municipal unit of Gravia, Phocis, Greece. It is situated at the western end of the wide Cephissus valley, at the foot of the mountains Giona and Oeta. It is 3 km northwest of Gravia, 19 km north of Amfissa and 23 km south of Lamia. The Greek National Road 27 passes southeast of the village. The railway from Athens to Thessaloniki passes east of the village, with the nearest railway station at Bralos, 4 km east.
Achyra is a village and a community in the Medeon municipal unit, Aetolia-Acarnania, Greece. It was originally situated on a mountain slope, 7 km west of Katouna, 13 km east of Palairos and 37 km northwest of Agrinio but at some point in the 20th century a landslide took away part of the village and it was subsequently moved to its present location on the outskirts of Katouna.
George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron was an English poet and peer. He is one of the major figures of the Romantic movement, and is regarded as being among the greatest of English poets. Among his best-known works are the lengthy narratives Don Juan and Childe Harold's Pilgrimage; much of his shorter lyrics in Hebrew Melodies also became popular.
Xiromero is a municipality in the Aetolia-Acarnania regional unit, West Greece region, Greece. The seat of the municipality is the town Astakos. Its borders do not coincide with the historical region of Xiromero, which extends to parts of the territory of the neighbouring municipality of Aktio-Vonitsa and most notably the area around Katouna. The municipality has an area of 590.113 km2.
Loutraki is a seaside settlement in the Aktio-Vonitsa Municipality of the regional unit of Aetolia-Acarnania, Greece. It has a very small resident population as most house owners are from the nearby village of Katouna, and use the area as their summer or seasonal residence, linked to the seasonal cultivation of olives, or earlier in the century of tobacco crops.
Sidirokastro, officially referred to as Sidirokastron, is a semi-mountainous settlement near Avlonas and is administratively part of the Municipality of Trifylia, in Messinia, Greece. Sidirokastro was the seat of the old Municipality of Avlona (1835–1912) and also of the former Municipality of Avlona of Messinia (1997–2010).
