Katti Frederiksen (born 12 March 1982) [1] is a Greenlandic writer,poet,linguist and politician (Siumut).
Frederiksen was born in 1982 to sheep farmer Sofus Frederiksen and politician Suka K. Frederiksen (1965–2020). [1] She grew up in Narsaq, [2] but moved to Nuuk in 2004 to study language,literature and media at the University of Greenland. After completing her bachelor's degree in 2007,she obtained her candidate's degree there in 2011,partly after a stay abroad at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. From 2007 to 2008,Frederiksen worked as a Greenlandic language high school teacher. From 2008 to 2015,she worked at Oqaasileriffik,which she then took over until 2020. [3] She is the owner of the children's book publishing house Iperaq. From 2018 to 2020 she ran a caféin Nuuk. [1]
In 2006,Frederiksen published the collection of poems and novellas Uummatima kissaa (Warmness of my heart). In 2012,she published her second volume of poetry,100% Eskimo Inuk. [4] Her poems deal with the Greenlandic language and the Greenlanders' sense of identity. [5]
On 5 November 2020,she was appointed Minister for Education,Culture and Church in the Kielsen VIII Cabinet,succeeding Ane Lone Bagger,who had resigned in the summer,without having previously stood as a candidate in elections. [6]
In 2021 Frederiksen was awarded the international Vigdís prize for culture,named after former president of Iceland Vigdís Finnbogadottir. The award is conferred for outstanding contributions to world languages and cultures. [7]
Frederiksen is the mother of three children. [3] She is also one of the best marathon runners in the country. [1]
Nuuk is the capital of and most populous city in Greenland,an autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark. Nuuk is the seat of government and the territory's largest cultural and economic center. Henriette Ellen Kathrine Vilhelmine Rasmussen née Jeremiassen was a Greenlandic educator,journalist,women's rights activist and politician. In 1992,she provided support for the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and in 1996,was appointed principal advisor to the ILO in connection with the 1989 Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention. As a member of Inuit Ataqatigiit from the early 1980s,she strove for Greenlandic independence from Denmark and served as Greenland's Minister of Culture and Education (2003–2005).

The little Danes experiment,also known simply as the experiment,was a 1951 Danish operation where 22 Greenlandic Inuit children were sent to Danish foster families in an attempt to re-educate them as "little Danes". While the children were all supposed to be orphans,most were not. Six children were adopted while in Denmark,and sixteen returned to Greenland,only to be placed in Danish-speaking orphanages and never live with their families again. Half of the children experienced mental health disturbances,and half of them died in young adulthood. The government of Denmark officially apologised in 2020,after several years of demands from Greenlandic officials.
