Kavita Devi, alternatively Kavita Bundelkhandi, [1] [2] is an Indian journalist and news presenter. [3] She is the editor-in-chief and co-founder of the grassroots feminist news network Khabar Lahariya. [2] [4] Devi was notably the first Dalit ("untouchable") to become a member of the Editor's Guild of India. [3]

Biography

Kavita Devi was born in the remote village of Kunjan Purwa, [5] near Banda, Uttar Pradesh, to a family of Dalit farmers. [2] [6] The eldest among six children, [5] she was married off at the age of 12 and received no formal education. [7] In her testimony, Devi states that a non-government organisation (NGO) had opened a center in her village where she studied extensively for six months, [5] and after substantial resistance from other villagers including her family. [8] She is noted to have been the first woman from her village to have received an education as a result. [9] In later years, she has gone on to complete her graduation and earned a Master of Arts in journalism. [6]

Devi states that she started working with a small newsletter Mahila Dakiya, which was run by the center in her village and marked the beginning of her journalistic career. [3] [6] Eventually in 2002, [9] she co-founded Khabar Lahariya along with seven other women, with the support an NGO called Nirantar, [10] and funding from the Dorabji Tata Trust, the National Foundation of India and the Dalit Foundation. [11] [12] In 2004, the journalists at the paper collectively became the recipient of the Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Women Mediapersons. [10] By 2014, the paper had six editions and journalist staff of around 40 women. [13] It was described by Business Standard , as having become the backbone of the people in the impoverished rural regions of Bundelkhand and Awadh, in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. [14]

Over time, Devi has served in a number of positions in the organisation such as the editor of the Banda edition, [15] the head of digital operations, [16] and initially as a solo field journalist. [7] She also runs a weekly news commentary show called The Kavita Show on the network and has been the editor-in-chief since 2019. [6] [17] In the same year, she appeared as a speaker at a TED conference which resulted in widespread attention on her story, [18] and was described by the host and actor Shah Rukh Khan as an inspiration. [19]

Phoolan Devi (1963–2001), popularly known as the Bandit Queen, was an Indian dacoit (bandit) who later became a Member of Parliament, before being assassinated. She was a Mallah woman who grew up in poverty in a village in the state of Uttar Pradesh, where her family was on the losing side of a land dispute which caused them many problems. After being sexually abused repeatedly and married off at the age of eleven, she joined a dacoit group, becoming its leader. Her gang robbed higher caste villages and held up trains and vehicles. She became a heroine to the lower castes for being a Robin Hood figure who punished her rapists and evaded capture by the authorities. Phoolan Devi was charged in absentia for the 1981 Behmai massacre, in which twenty Thakur men were executed, allegedly on her command; afterwards the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh resigned and calls to capture Devi were amplified. She surrendered two years later in a carefully negotiated settlement and spent eleven years in Gwalior prison, without facing trial.

According to Kanshi Ram, when he founded the party in 1984, the Bahujans comprised 85 percent of India's population, but were divided into 6,000 different castes. The party claims to be inspired by the philosophy of Gautama Buddha, B. R. Ambedkar, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Narayana Guru, and Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj.

Uttar Pradesh has a population more than that of Pakistan. There is an average population density of 828 persons per km² i.e. 2,146 per sq mi. The capital of Uttar Pradesh is Lucknow, and Prayagraj serves as the state’s judicial capital. Hindus and Muslims both consider the state as a holy place.

The Gulabi Gang is a female vigilante group in India. Sampat Pal Devi started the group in 2006 in Banda District, Uttar Pradesh. The group is dedicated to empowering women of all castes and protecting them from domestic violence, sexual violence, and oppression. They also combat political corruption and the oppression of lower caste people, specifically Dalits.

Khabar Lahariya is an Indian newspaper, published in various rural dialects of Hindi, including Bundeli, Avadhi and Bajjika dialects. The newspaper was started by Nirantar, a New Delhi-based non-government organisation which focuses on gender and education. Initially seen as a women-only publication, it now covers local political news, local crime reports, social issues and entertainment, all reported from a feminist perspective. As of September 2012, its total print-run, all editions included, was around 6000 copies; the management claimed an estimated readership of 80,000. Since its digitalisation its outreach has massively extended.

Purushottam Naresh Dwivedi was an Indian politician, latterly in prison on rape charges. As a member of the Bahujan Samaj Party, he won the 2007 Uttar Pradesh state assembly elections from Naraini in southern Uttar Pradesh, and he was elected an MLA.

The Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly election followed as a result the expiration of the five-year term of the previous legislature elected in Uttar Pradesh, India. Pankaj Singh Pundir, popularly known as Sher Singh Rana or S. Rana, is an Indian criminal turned politician who was sentenced for the 2001 vendetta-related assassination of Indian dacoit-turned-parliamentarian, Phoolan Devi. In August 2014, Rana was sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of ₹100,000 for Devi's assassination, as well as charges of conspiracy, after a 10-year trial.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid down the foundation stone of Bundelkhand Expressway on 29 February 2020 in Gonda village, Chitrakoot, and the expressway was inaugurated on 16 July 2022. The expressway will boost tourism to Chitrakoot Dham.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Dalit feminism</span>

Dalit feminism is a feminist perspective that includes questioning caste and gender roles among the Dalit population and within feminism and the larger women's movement. Dalit women primarily live in South Asia, mainly in Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan. Dalit women face different challenges than women in oppressor castes in these countries. They are more likely to be poor, uneducated and socially marginalized. Dalit feminists advocate and have advocated for equal rights for Dalit women based on gender, caste and other issues. They have addressed conferences, created organizations and helped elect other Dalit women into political office.

Arfa Khanum Sherwani is an Indian journalist, and the senior editor of The Wire. She was the only Indian journalist to cover the 2014 Afghan presidential elections. She is an alumna of Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia. She has received the Red Ink Award and the Chameli Devi Jain Award.

Writing with Fire is a 2021 Indian documentary film directed by filmmakers Sushmit Ghosh and Rintu Thomas about the journalists running the Dalit women led newspaper Khabar Lahariya, as they shift from 14-years of print to digital journalism using smartphones. It is the first Indian feature documentary to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
