Keith Urgo (born April 25, 1980) is an American college basketball coach who is the head coach of the Fordham Rams men's basketball program in the Atlantic 10 Conference. [1]

Early years and playing career

Urgo was born in Washington D.C. the 8th of 10 children to parents originally from Brooklyn; his father attended Fordham. [2] [3] Urgo attended Gonzaga College High School. For college, he attended Fairfield University where he was a dual sport athlete, playing basketball and lacrosse. [4]

Coaching career

After graduating from college, Urgo founded the non-profit organization, Playing for Peace. [5] He began his coaching career in 2004 as an assistant coach for Gonzaga College High School, his former high school before leaving in 2008 for Villanova, where he started off as a video assistant before becoming the teams director of basketball operations. [1] In 2012 he was hired by Penn State, where he served as an assistant head coach for 10 years. [6] In 2021 he was hired as the associate head coach for Fordham under Kyle Neptune.

On April 28, 2022 Urgo was named the head coach of Fordham following the departure of Neptune to Villanova. [7] [8]

The 1971 NCAA University Division basketball tournament involved 25 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 13, 1971, and ended with the championship game on March 27 in Houston, Texas. A total of 29 games were played, including a third-place game in each region and a national third-place game. This was the last time the Final Four was held in Houston until 2011.

George Melvin "Jud" Heathcote was an American basketball player and coach. He was a college basketball head coach for 24 seasons: five at the University of Montana (1971–1976) and nineteen at Michigan State University (1976–1995). Heathcote coached Magic Johnson during his two years at Michigan State, concluding with the 1979 national championship season. He also coached the University of Montana to a national handball championship in 1974.

Francis Joseph Dunphy is an American college basketball coach, who is the head coach of the La Salle Explorers of the Atlantic 10 Conference. He is the former men's basketball coach at Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania. He succeeded John Chaney in 2006 and was succeeded by Aaron McKie in 2019. In June 2020, Dunphy was named interim athletic director of Temple. In 2022, he was named the men's basketball coach of the La Salle Explorers.

Charles William Driesell is an American basketball coach who is the boys' varsity basketball head coach at the Maret School in Washington, D.C. Formerly a college basketball coach, Driesell served as an assistant coach under Gary Williams at the University of Maryland, spent six seasons as head coach at Marymount University, and was head coach at The Citadel from 2010 to 2015. He is the son of former Maryland coach Lefty Driesell, and played for his father's team in college. Driesell was named the new boys' basketball coach at the Maret School in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 2015.

The Fordham Rams men's basketball team represents Fordham University, located in the Bronx, New York, in NCAA Division I basketball competition. They compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Rams play their home games at the Rose Hill Gymnasium (3,200), the nation's oldest on-campus collegiate basketball arena still in use. On February 28, 1940, Fordham University played in the nation's first televised college basketball game, when the Rams fell to Pitt at Madison Square Garden. Fordham hired former assistant coach Keith Urgo on April 28, 2022.

The 2021–22 Villanova Wildcats men's basketball team represented Villanova University in the 2021–22 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. Led by head coach Jay Wright in his 21st and final year of coaching, the Wildcats played their home games at the Finneran Pavilion on the school's campus in the Philadelphia suburb of Villanova, Pennsylvania and Wells Fargo Center as members of the Big East Conference. They finished the season 30–8, 16–4 in Big East play to finish in second place. They defeated St. John's, UConn, and Creighton to win the Big East tournament championship. As a result, they received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as the No. 2 seed in the South region. They defeated Delaware, Ohio State, Michigan, and Houston to advance to the Final Four. There they lost to eventual national champion Kansas.

They finished the season 16–16, 8–10 in A-10 play to finish in eighth place. They defeated George Washington in the second round of the A-10 tournament before losing to Davidson in the quarterfinals.

The 2022–23 Fordham Rams men's basketball team represented Fordham University during the 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Rams, led by first-year head coach Keith Urgo, played their home games at Rose Hill Gymnasium in The Bronx, New York as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. This was the Rams' first 20-win season since the 1990–91 season. They finished the season 25-8, 12-6 in A-10 Play for a three-way tie for 2nd place. They defeated La Salle in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament before losing to Dayton in the semifinals. Despite having 25 wins, they didn’t participate in a postseason tournament.
