Kenneth E. Parris III

Kenneth E. Parris III (born 1975 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a New York visual artist and creative director. He received his BFA in illustration and an AAS in graphic design at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

His paintings and installations have been critically acclaimed by a number of publications and media including the Walker Art Center online magazine, National Public Radio, Time Out New York [1] and Trend Hunter. [2]

Parris traveled on the final two-year world tour with The Merce Cunningham Dance Company where he created an original series of drawings and text titled "Drawing Dance" for The New York Times . This series was featured for 23 weeks on the ArtsBeat blog [3] and culminated in an exhibition made possible in part through a Space Grant awarded from Chashama. Parris continued drawing the series from reference photographs and expanded it to include mixed media paintings which were shown in multiple art galleries and venues in New York City, Houston, Philadelphia, and at Jacob's Pillow during the Summer dance festival. Through a collaboration with the American Emo band Mineral, Parris designed and art directed their 2019 retrospective book and album titled, One Day When We Are Young.

Parris collaborated with former Merce Cunningham dancer and Pam Tanowitz Dance Company artistic associate, rehearsal director, and dancer Melissa Toogood and sister Jodie Toogood on a multi-disciplinary performance piece titled SET A|PART described as “a joy to watch as it turned into Art in motion” by Kym Vaitiekus for Broadway World. To commemorate Merce Cunningham’s Centennial, the 92nd Street Y (92Y) hosted a Harkness Dance Festival Conversation [8] about Parris’s collaboration with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company featuring him and former company members: Kimberly Bartosik, Dylan Crossman, Douglas Dunn, and Melissa Toogood. Vail Valley Foundation brought a selection of his work to Vail, Colorado, as well as facilitated the reproduction of works on outdoor displays throughout the village during Vail International Dance Festival in 2019. Parris has taught and lectured at the Miami Ad School in New York. [10]

For The One Club, Parris was on a lecture panel about Living A Creative Life during the Here Are All The Black People conference in New York City (2014). [11]

He was a recipient of a studio artist grant in Chashama’s Work Space Program from 2012 to 2021. [12]

Parris primarily lives and works in Brooklyn.

Barbara Dilley (Lloyd) is an American dancer, performance artist, improvisor, choreographer and educator, best known for her work as a prominent member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company (1963-1968), and then with the groundbreaking dance and performance ensemble The Grand Union, from 1969 to 1976. She has taught movement and dance at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, since 1974, developing a pedagogy that emphasizes what she calls “embodied awareness,” an approach that combines dance and movement studies with meditation, “mind training” and improvisational composition. She served as the president of Naropa University from 1985 to 1993.

Sarah Michelson is a British choreographer and dancer who lives and works in New York City, New York. Her work is characterized by demanding physicality and repetition, rigorous formal structures, and inventive lighting and sound design. She was one of two choreographers whose work was included in the 2012 Whitney Biennial, the first time dance was presented as part of the bi-annual exhibition. Her work has also been staged at The Walker Art Center, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, The Kitchen, and the White Oak Dance Project. She received New York Dance and Performance awards for Group Experience (2002), Shadowmann Parts One and Two (2003), and Dogs (2008). Justin Tornow is an American dancer, choreographer, dance scholar, and dance teacher. She is the founder and artistic director of COMPANY, a co-founder and co-organizer of Durham Independent Dance Artists, former Board President of the North Carolina Dance Alliance, and producer of the PROMPTS art series in Durham, North Carolina. Tornow is trained in Cunningham technique and is a New York Public Library Research Fellow in Cunningham dance pedagogy. She serves on the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Elon University, and the American Dance Festival.

Marianne Preger-Simon is an American dancer, choreographer, writer, and psychotherapist. She is best known for her work as a founding member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.
