Upington is a town founded in 1873 and located in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, on the banks of the Orange River. The town was originally called Olijvenhoutsdrift, due to the abundance of olive wood trees in the area, but later renamed after Sir Thomas Upington, Attorney-General and then Prime Minister of the Cape. It originated as a mission station established in 1871 and run by Reverend Christiaan Schröder. The mission station now houses the Kalahari Orange Museum. The museum is also the home of a donkey statue, which recognises the enormous contribution that this animal made to the development of the region during the pioneering days of the 19th century.
Zwelethu Lukanyiso "Mighty" Madasa is a South African politician and lawyer who served in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2010, excepting a month-long hiatus in 2009. He represented the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) until September 2005, when he crossed the floor to the African National Congress (ANC). He resigned from the National Assembly in September 2010 and became the Clerk of the Pan-African Parliament.

Nkosinathi Benson Fihla is a South African politician and former anti-apartheid activist who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2013. He subsequently served as Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality from March 2013 until May 2015. Fihla first joined the ANC in 1954 through its Youth League and he was imprisoned on Robben Island from 1964 to 1978 for his work with Umkhonto we Sizwe.
Dennis Victor Bloem is a South African politician who is currently serving as the national spokesperson of the Congress of the People (COPE). He represented COPE in the National Council of Provinces from 2009 to 2014 and before that he represented the African National Congress (ANC) in Parliament from 1994 to 2009. A former United Democratic Front activist in the Free State, Bloem defected from the ANC to COPE ahead of the 2009 general election.
Bangilizwe Mlindiwekhaya Solo is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2009. In 2006, he pled guilty to defrauding Parliament in connection with the Travelgate scam.
Mpho Morepye Sephwe Lekgoro is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2007. He was formerly an ANC Youth League activist.
Kgotso Moses Khumalo is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2004 to 2009. He was the inaugural Mayor of JB Marks Local Municipality in the North West from 2016 until May 2021, when he stepped aside while facing fraud and theft charges.
David Mtheteleli Dali was a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2001 to 2009. A former Umkhonto we Sizwe operative, he subsequently served as a special adviser to Lulu Xingwana, the Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, from 2009 until June 2012, when he was shot dead on his farm in the Eastern Cape.
André Hurtley Gaum is a South African lawyer and politician who is currently serving as a full-time commissioner at the South African Human Rights Commission. He formerly served in the National Assembly, representing the African National Congress (ANC) and before that the New National Party (NNP). He was the Deputy Minister of Education from November 2008 to May 2009.
Johannes Jacobus "Hannes" Combrinck was a South African politician, civil servant and farmer who represented the Northern Cape in the National Assembly from 2004 to 2009. He represented the African National Congress (ANC), which he joined in 1998 after becoming disillusioned with the National Party. He later served as Speaker of Dawid Kruiper Local Municipality from 2009 to 2011 and was still working in municipal administration in the Northern Cape when he died in 2020.
Cikizwa Ivy Gcina was a South African politician and anti-apartheid activist who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2009. During apartheid, she was a prominent figure in community organising in Port Elizabeth, particularly through the United Democratic Front and the Port Elizabeth Women's Organisation, the women's wing of the Port Elizabeth Black Civic Organisation.
Zamiwonga James Kati was a South African politician and former anti-apartheid activist who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly until his death in 2006. He joined the ANC in 1949 and was a member of the Umkhonto we Sizwe underground in the Transkei.
Ntombikayise Margaret Twala is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2007 to 2014, serving the Eastern Cape constituency. She had first joined the assembly during the first post-apartheid Parliament but had lost her seat in 2004. She is a former member of the national executive committee of the ANC Women's League.
