The Kentwell Cup is the major trophy for the New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union (NSWSRU), colloquially known as the "Subbies" competition. [1] It is awarded to the first grade premiers of the first division competition.

Contents

The Kentwell Cup was originally presented by W.H. Kentwell, president of the Mosman Rugby Club in 1923 and is still presented to the first grade premiers in first division. The first winners of the Kentwell Cup out of a field of eight was Mosman. [2]

Teams that have played in the competition include those linked by geographical location, such as Drummoyne DRFC, Lane Cove RUFC, and Petersham RUFC; some are linked by connections to schools, such as Old Ignatians, Newington Old Boys (NOBs), St Patrick's Rugby Club and Knox Old Boys; while others have been linked by occupation, like Fire Brigades, Royal Australian Artillery, CBC Bank and Bondi Life Savers.

St Patrick's Rugby Club, also known as St Pats, is a rugby union club based in Strathfield, New South Wales. The club, formerly known as St Patrick's Old Boys, currently field six teams in the second division of the NSW Suburban competition, known as "Subbies". St Pats was formed in 1964 and since their elevation to first division had not been relegated until 2017. The club was formed by ex-students of St Patrick's College, Strathfield but now has members from various backgrounds including a number of international players.

The Waverley Rugby Football and Sporting Club is an Australian rugby club that was founded in 1971 by ex-students of the neighbouring Waverley College and their friends from other local schools. As the Club developed during the 1970s and 1980s, the name "Waverley", its players and supporters, became synonymous with diversity, reflecting the multiculturalism of the Waverley municipality. The club also developed into a sporting club playing netball, softball, touch football, volleyball and, in 2001, women's rugby. It is plays in the New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union, the largest rugby union football competition in New South Wales. The club is based in Bondi in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. In 2020, in its 50th season, Waverley's 1st and 3rd Grades reached the grand finals of the Kentwell and Whiddon Cups of the NSW Suburban Rugby Union competition. In 2022, Waverley had all 5 men's open teams reach the semi-finals as well as the U21s, playing in 5 grand finals and winning three: 2nds, 3rds & U21s. In 2023, Waverley had all 5 men's open teams again reach the semi-finals, playing in 3 grand finals and winning all three: 3rds, 4ths & 5ths.

Mosman Rugby Club is an Australian rugby union club. It is based is Mosman on the Lower North Shore of Sydney. Home games are played at Rawson Oval and Balmoral Oval. Mosman won the first Kentwell Cup in 1923 and Mosman continues to compete in Division One of the New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union.

Lane Cove Rugby Union Football Club is a rugby union club founded in 1949 and which participates in the New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union ("Subbies") competition. The club is situated in Lane Cove in Sydney, Australia. The home ground is Tantallon Oval. The club was successful in Sydney Rugby through the 1950s and 1960s and competitive in Division One Sub-Districts into the 1980s with victories including the Under 21 New South Wales State Premiership, the Bruce Graham Shield, Kentwell Cup, Whiddon Cup, Judd Cup trophies among others. Notable players have included Wallabies Ken Yanz and Saxon White, and Kangaroo Greg Florimo. Having been historically a Division One Club, Lane Cove seniors currently plays in New South Wales' Subbies' Division Five, while the thriving Lane Cove Juniors participate in the Gordon Juniors competition.

Petersham RUFC was founded in 1883, making it the oldest surviving suburban rugby club in Australia.

Patrick Danahy is a former American rugby union player. Danahy played both the lock and flanker positions. He currently plays for the Mosman Whales in NSW, Australia. He was selected to tour with the USA national rugby union team, the USA Eagles XV, for the Autumn 2010 tour of Europe. Patrick's debut game for his country was at the U21 level on 21 June 2007 against Canada, only six months after he first stepped onto the rugby pitch at his alma mater of Stanford University. He earned a spot on the 30 man roster for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Though he was forced to sit out the first final following a third yellow card in the competition, Danahy and the Mosman Whales won the 2016 and 2019 Kentwell Cups in the NSW Suburban Rugby competition during his tenure as captain.

Blue Mountains Rugby Club is based in the township of Lapstone within Greater Sydney, Australia. The club plays rugby union in the first division of the New South Wales Subbies competition  and currently fields teams in five men's grades, plus women's  and colts teams.
