The Woollahra Colleagues Rugby Union Football Club, known as Colleagues, is a rugby union club based in Woollahra, in Sydney, Australia. The club was founded in the 1930s and currently plays in the First Division of the NSWSRU competition.

History

A stalwart of the Woollahra Colleagues club and New South Wales Suburban Rugby for many years was Lindley John Forbes (John) Barraclough AM (1926-2005), a former New South Wales MP. The Barraclough Shield, which is the trophy for interstate matches between the New South Wales Suburban and Queensland Suburban representative teams, was named after him and has been contested annually since 1966. [1]

Colours and home ground

The Woollahra Colleagues club has the nickname "Blue Giants" and plays in a sky blue jersey and navy shorts. [2] The club's home grounds are Woollahra Ovals No. 2 and 3 at Rose Bay. [3]

Alliance

Colleagues shares an alliance with London club, Belsize Park Rugby Football Club. Belsize Park Rugby Football club was one of the founding clubs of the Rugby Football Union in 1871.

Premierships

Colleagues have won the Bruce Graham Shield on 25 occasions, and the Kentwell Cup on 16 occasions; in 1941, 1950, 1955, 1957, 1959, 1960, 1962, 1963, 1966, 1970, 1980, 1982, 1984, 1996, 2011 and 2022. [4]

Penrith Rugby Club, known as the Emus, is an Australian rugby union club based in Penrith, a western suburb of Sydney, New South Wales. The club was formed in 1965 as Nepean and renamed Penrith in 1981 and began playing in the Shute Shield in 1995 until their removal midway through the 2018 competition. Sydney Rugby Union chairman David Begg said the Emus had failed to 'meet the standards set for all clubs to compete at the premiership level'. The club was readmitted to the competition for the 2020 season before being dropped again ahead of the 2022 season.

The Waverley Rugby Football and Sporting Club was founded in 1971. It is plays in the New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union, the largest rugby union football competition in New South Wales. The club is based in Bondi in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. In 2020, in its 50th season, Waverley's 1st and 3rd Grades reached the grand finals of the Kentwell and Whiddon Cups of the NSW Suburban Rugby Union competition. In 2021, Waverley is celebrating its 50th Anniversary.

The club was successful in Sydney Rugby through the 1950s and 1960s and competitive in Division One Sub-Districts into the 1980s with victories including the Under 21 New South Wales State Premiership, the Bruce Graham Shield, Kentwell Cup, Whiddon Cup, Judd Cup trophies among others. Rugby union in Queensland has traditionally been one of the most popular professional and recreational team sports in the state. Rugby union was introduced in the British colony's capital Brisbane in 1876. Initially it struggled to gain a foothold due to the popularity of Australian rules there until it got its break in 1882 with the first inter-colonial matches against New South Wales, and the formation of the Northern Rugby Union. The Balmain Rugby Football Club is an Australian rugby union football club, based in Balmain, Sydney, New South Wales. The original club established in 1873 is one of the oldest rugby clubs in Australia. Balmain was one of the founding members in 1874 of the Southern Rugby Union, later renamed the New South Wales Rugby Union, which was the first governing body for the sport in the Southern Hemisphere. Billy Murdoch, who would later go on to captain the Australian cricket team, was Balmain's first captain, and he represented the club at the Southern Rugby Union's formation.
