Kevin Boehm is an American restaurateur who is the co-founder and co-owner of Boka Restaurant Group and the Independent Restaurant Coalition. With his business partner, Rob Katz, he operates 22 restaurants in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City. Kevin, along with his business partner, won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur in America in 2018.

Early life and education

Boehm was raised in Springfield, Illinois. He attended the University of Illinois.

Career

In 1993 Boehm opened his first restaurant on money he had saved as a server and bartender. He opened restaurants in Seaside, Florida, Springfield, Illinois, and Nashville Tennessee before founding Boka Restaurant Group with Rob Katz in 2002. Boehm has been featured as a judge on two episodes of Top Chef [1] and one episode of Top Chef Canada.

As a writer, Boehm has had pieces published in Esquire Magazine, [2] McSweeney's, [3] Plate Magazine, [4] and the Chicago Sun Times. He is also a contributing writer for Fast Company. [5] Kevin is currently working on writing his own book called Bottomless Cup, this will be set to release in 2025, published by Abrams Press. [6]

During the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, he co-founded and was involved in leading the Independent Restaurant Coalition, [7] [8] [9] an industry group founded during the pandemic to lobby the federal government for relief for restaurants and their employees, which culminated in $28.6 Billion in grants being given out by the federal government.

Honors

In 2018 Boehm won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur, [10] after being a finalist in 2015, 2016, [11] and 2017. [12] Boka Restaurant has been awarded one Michelin star for nine consecutive years.

Personal life

Boehm lives in Chicago in the neighborhood of River North.

Stephanie Izard is an American chef and television personality best known as the first female chef to win Bravo's Top Chef, taking the title during its fourth season. She is the co-owner and executive chef of three award-winning Chicago restaurants, Girl and the Goat, Little Goat, and Duck Duck Goat, and opened her first restaurant, Scylla as chef-owner at the age of 27. Izard received a James Beard Foundation Award for "Best Chef: Great Lakes" in 2013 for her work at Girl and the Goat. She has made a number of appearances on Top Chef since her win, both as a guest judge on subsequent seasons and as a participant in Top Chef Duels. In 2017, Izard competed in the Food Network series Iron Chef Gauntlet, where she overall defeated chefs Bobby Flay, Michael Symon, and Masaharu Morimoto to obtain the title of Iron Chef.

Kevin Gillespie is an American chef, author and former Top Chef contestant. He is a former co-owner and executive chef at Woodfire Grill in Atlanta. He opened Gunshow, a restaurant in Atlanta, in 2013 and Revival, a restaurant in Decatur, Georgia, in 2015. Gillespie also started Red Beard Restaurants, allowing Gillespie to expand and provide consulting services to other start-ups. Kevin Gillespie's Gamechanger opened in August 2017 on the 200 concourse western end zone of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Boka received 3 stars from the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Magazine. The executive chef is Lee Wolen. Boka won Chef of the Year for Lee Wolen in 2015 in the Chicago Tribune, and Restaurant of the Year at the Jean Banchet Awards. Wolen was also awarded the best Chef in America award from Highlights magazine.

Sepia is a mid-sized, upscale restaurant run by owner Emmanuel Nony and Executive Chef Andrew Zimmerman located in the West Loop neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Chef Zimmerman's menu is classified as New American cuisine, and focuses on local, seasonal products. Built in Chicago's Warehouse District, Sepia was originally a print shop from the 1890s. The renovation for the restaurant, designed by Gary Lee, included putting in a custom-tile, Art Nouveau floor and hand-crafted millwork in order to enhance the historical qualities of the building. Sepia also uses vintage stemware for their tables matching the vintage interior decor of the restaurant.

Ford Fry is an American chef and restaurateur based in Atlanta, Georgia. His team consists of 13 restaurants in Georgia, three restaurants in Houston, two in Charlotte and two in Nashville. Collectively, he owns 23 restaurants across America. Fry's portfolio of restaurants includes JCT. Kitchen & Bar, no. 246, The Optimist, St. Cecilia, Little Rey, Superica, Marcel State of Grace, BeetleCat, and La Lucha. Several of Fry's restaurants have received various accolades. In October 2015, CBS This Morning described Fry as "one of the most prolific chefs and restaurateurs" in the United States. In March 2021, Atlanta Eats dubbed Fry "a peerless restaurateur with many beloved brands."

Kwame Onwuachi is a Nigerian-American chef based in New York City, New York. A published author and restaurateur, he also appeared as a contestant on Top Chef in 2015. He was recognized by Food & Wine magazine, Esquire magazine, and the James Beard Foundation as "Rising Star Chef of the year" in 2019.

Simon Kim is a Korean-American restaurateur who owns and operates COTE Korean Steakhouse, a restaurant with locations in New York, Miami and Singapore. COTE New York has received a star from the Michelin Guide each year since opening in 2017.
