Kevin Colden is an American comic book writer and artist, as well as a webcomic artist. His work has been published in print by Zuda Comics, IDW Publishing, Image Comics, Alternative Comics, and Top Shelf Productions.

Webcomics are comics published on a website or mobile app. While many are published exclusively on the web, others are also published in magazines, newspapers or in comic books.

Zuda Comics

Zuda Comics was DC Comics' webcomics imprint from 2007 until 2010. Some of the imprints series won awards and nominations from comic industry's Glyph Comics Awards and Harvey Awards. Bayou, Volume 1 was also named one of the 2010 Great Graphic Novels for Teens by the American Library Association.

IDW Publishing US comic publisher

IDW Publishing is an American publisher of comic books, graphic novels, art books, and comic strip collections. It was founded in 1999 as the publishing division of Idea and Design Works, LLC (IDW), itself formed in 1999, and is regularly recognized as the fifth-largest comic book publisher in the United States, behind Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and Image Comics, ahead of other major comic book publishers such as Archie, Boom!, Dynamite and Oni Press. The company is perhaps best known for its licensed comic book adaptations of movies, television shows, video games, and cartoons.

Graphic novel Book with primarily comics contents

A graphic novel is a book made up of comics content. Although the word "novel" normally refers to long fictional works, the term "graphic novel" is applied broadly and includes fiction, non-fiction, and anthologized work. It is distinguished from the term "comic book", which is generally used for comics periodicals.

The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, commonly shortened to the Eisner Awards, are prizes given for creative achievement in American comic books, sometimes referred to as the comics industry's equivalent of the Academy Awards. They are named in honor of the pioneering writer and artist Will Eisner, who was a regular participant in the award ceremony until his death in 2005. The Eisner Awards include the Comic Industry's Hall of Fame.

Early life

Colden graduated in 2001 from the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art.[ citation needed ]

Career

Colden's career began in 2003, writing and illustrating short horror/humor stories for House of Twelve, Asylum Press and Media-Blasters. In 2006, he co-founded The Chemistry Set webcomic collective, where he created the horror comic Todt Hill with writer Neil Kleid. That year, he began illustrating covers for Sequart Research & Literacy Organization's non-fiction books. In 2007, Colden's graphic novel Fishtown, based on the Murder of Jason Sweeney, was awarded a Xeric Grant, but he declined the money in order to serialize the book with the ACT-I-VATE webcomics collective. It was published in print by IDW Publishing in Fall 2008 and was nominated for a 2009 Eisner Award in the category of Best Reality-Based Work. In December 2008, his webcomic I Rule the Night began on Zuda Comics. It was moved to the DC Comics digital app in 2010.

House of Twelve is an independent anthology comic book publisher based out of the New York metro area and run by artist Cheese Hasselberger. Also known as Ho12, it sponsors a monthly comic art collective held the first Friday of every month at Jack Demsey's Pub on 33rd Street in New York City, New York. They have been running since August 2001.

Neil Kleid is a U.S. cartoonist raised in Oak Park, Michigan, now living in New Jersey. He has received a 2003 Xeric Award grant for his graphic novella Ninety Candles (2004).

Murder of Jason Sweeney 2003 Homicide Event in Pennyslvania,United States.

Jason Keel Sweeney was a construction worker from Fishtown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who at the age of 16 was murdered by four teenagers for his paycheck on May 30, 2003. The perpetrators included a girl he was dating and his best friend since childhood. Due to the manner in which Sweeney was murdered, the ages of the teens involved, and the seeming indifference of the perpetrators, the crime received national media coverage.

In 2012, Colden teamed with novelist and screenwriter John Shirley to create the first new comic book update of James O'Barr's The Crow in thirteen years, entitled The Crow: Death and Rebirth.

John Shirley American writer

John Shirley is an American writer, primarily of fantasy, science fiction, dark street fiction, and songwriting. He has also written one historical novel, a western about Wyatt Earp, Wyatt in Wichita, and one non-fiction book, Gurdjieff: An Introduction to His Life and Ideas. Shirley has written novels, short stories, TV scripts and screenplays--including The Crow and has published over 40 books and 8 short-story collections. As a musician, Shirley has fronted his own bands and written lyrics for Blue Öyster Cult and others. An extensive compilation of songs by John Shirley, Broken Mirror Glass was released by Black October Records. His most recent album is Spaceship Landing in a Cemetery, a collaboration with prog rocker Jerry King, aided by a host of musicians. He has written about spirituality for Parabola Magazine and Quest Magazine.
