Kevin Golsby (born 1935) [1] is an Australian actor and voice-over artist, known for his iconic rich voice and seventies moustache. His extensive body of work includes appearances in film, television, theatre and voice-over roles.

Golsby was born in 1935 in Australia. Growing up, he developed a passion for radio and pursued his interest in becoming a presenter and DJ.

Professional life

Radio

Golsby began his on-air career at 16 as an announcer on station 2MG in Mudgee. [2] Within two years he was the youngest announcer on Sydney radio station 2UE, at 18 years of age. [3] In 1959 Golsby left his regular presenting spot and went on a world tour, travelling to Europe and the USA for 2CH and interviewing jazz musicians such as Nina Simone and Count Basie. [4]

In 1976 he was a core cast member, with Noeline Brown and Ross Higgins, of radio 2BL's sketch comedy program The Naked Vicar Show .

Voice-over work

Golsby was the voice of newsreels for Fox Movietone (Australia) (later Cinesound Movietone Productions) and between 1960 and 1976 narrated over one thousand news stories. [5]

In 1965 he introduced Australians to decimal currency as the voice of "Dollar Bill" in a series of television commercials (with frequent collaborator Ross Higgins as "Mr.Pound"). [6]

Most recently, in 2017, he was the voice of a "yes" campaign for the Marriage Equality Plebiscite.

Television

Throughout the 1970s, Golsby and voice-over colleague Ross Higgins dominated Australian airwaves. While enjoying this success, his break-through role came in 1977 when Noeline Brown, Golsby and Higgins were the hosts and key regular performers in popular sketch comedy series Naked Vicar Show, [7] which spanned radio, television and theatre. He played various characters in the series, which lasted two seasons. Between the sixties and the noughties Golsby appeared in dozens of Australian television series, in both comedic and dramatic roles. He was often cast as a police officer.

Theatre

Golsby performed in several stage productions during the seventies and eighties including theatre runs of the Naked Vicar Show in Sydney and Melbourne, [8] [9] Flexitime at the Phillip St Theatre [10] and, in 2011, The Jetty, at Merrigong Theatre Wollongong. [11]

Personal life

A 1973 Women's Weekly article recounts a story of Golsby and his wife racing to the hospital for the birth of their child and mentions that he lived in a house in Middle Harbour, Sydney. [2]

In 2003 Golsby published a memoir, A Life with Laughs, as part of the Lexington Avenue Press "Fabric of a nation" series. [12]

In 2017 Golsby published his fourth book, [13] a historical novel, The Makepeace chronicle : an account of the remarkable life of John Swiftarrow Makepeace. [14]

Noeline Mabel Brown, credited also as Noelene Brown, is an Australian actress and comedian. She has appeared in numerous films, television shows, theatrical productions and radio programs dating back to 1959.

The Naked Vicar Show is an Australian satirical comedy radio and television show. The series was created, written and produced by Gary Reilly and Tony Sattler of RS Productions, it premiered on radio in 1976 on ABC Radio Double J, and there was a record made featuring highlights from the first series, before making the transition to television broadcast on the Seven Network in 1977 and ended in 1978. The stars also performed a live cabaret season of the show during 1976. The program was the forerunner to the comedy series Kingswood Country.

Ross Higgins was an Australian vaudevillian, character actor, television host, comedian, singer and voice actor. He was best known for his role as Ted Bullpitt in the 1980s television situation comedy series Kingswood Country and brief revival Bullpitt!. He was also a commercial advertiser who provided the voice of animated character "Louie the Fly" in the television ad campaign for Mortein, over a 50-year period as well as Mr. Pound, when decimal currency was first introduced in Australia.

RS Productions was an Australian television and radio production company best known for producing the 1980s television sitcom Kingswood Country. The company was founded by Gary Reilly and Tony Sattler, originally to produce comic sketches such as The Novels of Fiona Wintergreen and "anti-ads" for ABC youth radio 2JJ and for its "Local Radio" network. Titles included Chuck Chunder of the Space Patrol (1975), Doctors and Nurses (1976) and The Naked Vicar Show (1976–77), for which a compilation of highlights is available on cassette tape.

Steve Earl Higgins is an American writer, producer, announcer, actor, and comedian. He has served as the announcer of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon since 2014, and as a writer and producer of Saturday Night Live since 1995. Prior to The Tonight Show, he was the announcer for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon from 2009 to 2014. Early in his career, he was part of the sketch comedy trio The Higgins Boys and Gruber, who had their own eponymous sketch series on Comedy Central from 1989 to 1991.

Paul Makin is a South Australia based television and radio journalist. He started as a cadet journalist at Radio 5KA Adelaide in 1973 joined Radio 2UE Sydney in 1976 before moving to television; he is currently a freelance presenter for Channel 7 Adelaide.

Tony Sattler is an Australian television writer and producer most famous for his development of the Australian television comedies The Naked Vicar Show and Kingswood Country with writer Gary Reilly.

Robyn Moore is an Australian voice-over artist and actor who runs a motivational speaking business.
