The series was written and produced by Gary Reilly and Tony Sattler and made by their company RS Productions for ABC Radio's Double J, (later Triple J when the station changed from AM to FM), before making a record titled The Naked Vicar Show in 1975 (containing highlights from season 1) and being adapted successfully for television by Channel Seven. The series premiered in 1977 and ended in 1978. The stars also performed a live cabaret season of the show during 1976.
The series starred comedy actress Noeline Brown (who had come to fame on The Mavis Bramston Show ), veteran announcer Kevin Golsby and actor-comedian Ross Higgins, with a supporting cast including Colin McEwan, Julie McGregor and Laurel McGowan.

The Young Doctors is an Australian early-evening soap opera originally broadcast on the Nine Network and produced by the Reg Grundy Organisation, it aired from Monday 8 November 1976 until Wednesday 30 March 1983. The series is primarily set in the fictional Albert Memorial Hospital, as well as the restaurant/nightclub Bunny's Place, and is fundamentally concerned with the romances and relations between younger members of the hospital staff, rather than typical medical issues and procedures.

They had a succession of hits worldwide, including eight top-five hits on the US Billboard Hot 100, "Lost in Love" (1979), "All Out of Love", "Every Woman in the World", "The One That You Love", "Here I Am", "Sweet Dreams", "Even the Nights Are Better" and "Making Love Out of Nothing at All" (1983). In Australia, they had four top ten placements with "Love and Other Bruises" (1976), "All Out of Love", "Every Woman in the World" and "The One That You Love". Their highest charting studio album, The One That You Love (1981) reached number ten in both Australia and the US. Titles included Chuck Chunder of the Space Patrol (1975), Doctors and Nurses (1976) and The Naked Vicar Show (1976–77), for which a compilation of highlights is available.
