The Red Shirts or Redshirts of the Southern United States were white supremacist paramilitary terrorist groups that were active in the late 19th century in the last years of,and after the end of,the Reconstruction era of the United States. Red Shirt groups originated in Mississippi in 1875,when anti-Reconstruction private terror units adopted red shirts to make themselves more visible and threatening to Southern Republicans,both whites and freedmen. Similar groups in the Carolinas also adopted red shirts.

College teams throughout the state represent their particular South Carolina institution,along with the state being a prime destination for golf and water sports.
The 2016 United States presidential election was held on November 8,2016,as part of the 2016 General Election in which all 50 states plus the District of Columbia participated. South Carolina voters chose electors to represent them in the Electoral College via a popular vote pitting the Republican Party's nominee,businessman Donald Trump,and running mate Indiana Governor Mike Pence against Democratic Party nominee,former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her running mate,Virginia Senator Tim Kaine.
