Kevin 'Hank' McGourty is an Irish dual player of Gaelic games, i.e. Gaelic football and hurling, who plays for the St Gall's club, County Antrim and Ulster, and, previously, Queen's University Belfast and University College Dublin.

Biography

McGourty was educated at De La Salle Boys School Belfast, Queen's University Belfast, University College Dublin, and Blackhall Place.

Following the successful completion of a Bachelor of Arts (Joint Honors) Modern History and Political Science at Queen's he became involved in electoral politics. Between 2004 and 2007 he became the first student to be elected to political office at Queen's University Belfast Students Union on three occasions. During this period he served as Vice Chairperson of the Council of University Sport Ireland (CUSAI), now known as Student Sport Ireland. He also served on the National Executive Committee of the British University Sports Association (BUSA), and on the Board of the European University Sports Association (EUSA). During this period he was appointed onto the Russell Group of Universities SU committee, and served as Chairman of the Universities Academic Board. He also served on the 2007 Westminster Higher Education Committee review of Higher Education, representing Northern Ireland. [1]

In 2007 he was a member of the Sigerson Cup winning squad at QUB, being named Player of the Tournament. He was awarded full colours by the university for his achievements beating the Poly in the final that year, containing several Lamh Dearg players. [2]

In 2010 he was part of the St Gall's team that won the club's (and Antrim's) first All-Ireland Club Football title, completing a run of 10 out of 11 Antrim County Championship titles in the process. [3] [4]

In 2011 he was joint captain of University College Dublin's Sigerson Cup team in that competition's centenary year, whilst reading for a Postgraduate in Political Science. The university awarded him an Elite Athlete Bursary, alongside Noel McGrath (Tipperary hurler) and future Irish Olympians, Claire Lambe (rowing) and Arthur Lanigan-O'Keeffe (pentathlon). The university awarded him full colours for his sporting achievements. [5]

In 2018 the Law Society of Ireland awarded him a MOOC Certificate in Sports Law. [6]

At primary and secondary schools he was an accomplished soccer player and, between 1993 and 2000, played on De La Salle College's schoolboy team, during which time he won four Northern Ireland Cup medals. He subsequently represented both Donegal Celtic and Carrick Rangers in the Irish Football League.

He is a former columnist on sporting matters with the Gaelic Life and County Antrim Post newspapers. [7]

He is an Irish republican, with previous ties to the Fianna Fáil party, and is an infrequent blogger on the Wordpress site on sport, politics and legal matters. [8] [9] [10] [11] [12]

The first team was an amalgamation of students from UCD and Cecilia St. Although UCD had been playing Gaelic football unofficially since 1900, the official club history began in the season of 1911/1912.

Dublin City University Gaelic Athletic Association Club is the GAA club at Dublin City University. The club fields teams in men's Gaelic football, hurling, ladies' Gaelic football and camogie. It also organises Gaelic handball. The club mainly competes in intervarsity competitions such as the Sigerson Cup, the Fitzgibbon Cup, the O'Connor Cup and the Ashbourne Cup. DCU has also entered competitions organised by the Leinster GAA, including the O'Byrne Cup, the Kehoe Cup and Walsh Cup. In 2016 St. Patrick's College, Drumcondra merged with Dublin City University. As a result some DCU GAA teams, especially reserve teams, compete as DCU St Patrick's or DCU Dóchas Éireann.

Bernard Laurence Gaughran, better known as Benny Gaughran is a solicitor and Gaelic footballer. He played Gaelic football at a senior level in four different decades starting in the 1960s with Clan na Gael (Louth), UCD (Dublin), Civil Service (Dublin) and St Sylvester's (Dublin) GAA clubs and was a member of the Louth Minor & Senior inter-county teams from the 1960s until the 1980s and the Dublin Over 40s team in the 1990s. He received several All Stars nominations, and won an All-Ireland Club medal with UCD (Dublin), three Dublin Championship medals, a National League medal, a Railway Cup medal, a Sigerson’s medal and many other honours. He was also selected on numerous occasions for the combined universities’ teams and the Leinster team.

The Collingwood Cup is an association football cup competition featuring university teams from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. It is organised by the Irish Universities Football Union, and is the oldest surviving all Ireland association football competition. University College Dublin were the inaugural winners, and later became the cup's most successful team. The competition has been played almost annually since 1914, taking a break during the First World War/Irish War of Independence era and again in 1932 and 1933 due to a dispute between the Irish Football Association and the Football Association of Ireland. In 2014 the Collingwood Cup celebrated its centenary with a dinner that featured Martin O'Neill as a guest speaker. The 2014 final was broadcast live on Setanta Sports and the tournament was sponsored by Eircom.

James Loughrey is a Gaelic footballer who plays as a right corner-back at senior level for the Cork county team.

The 2020 Sigerson Cup was the 110th staging of the Sigerson Cup since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1911. It was sponsored by Electric Ireland, and known as the Electric Ireland HE GAA Sigerson Cup for sponsorship purposes.

Kieran Denvir was a Gaelic footballer and hurler from Northern Ireland. He was a member of the Down senior football team from the early 1950s until 1960. At club level he played with numerous teams, including Kilclief, University College Dublin, Ballina Stephenites, and Greencastle.
