Khatangsky District was a former district (raion) of the former Taymyr (Dolgan-Nenets) Autonomous Okrug, Russia which was merged into Krasnoyarsk Krai on 1 January 2007. [1] The administrative centre of the district was the town of Khatanga.
A raion is a type of administrative unit of several post-Soviet states. The term is from the French "rayon", which is both a type of a subnational entity and a division of a city, and is commonly translated in English as "district".
Taymyr Dolgano-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, or Taymyria, was a federal subject of Russia, the northernmost in mainland Russia. It was named after the Taymyr Peninsula. It was also called Dolgan-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, by the name of the indigenous people, Dolgans and Nenetses.

Khatangsky district was located in the east of the Taymyr Dolgan-Nenets AO. It encompassed the south-eastern part of the Taymyr Peninsula and the majority of the Khatanga River was in the district.
The Taymyr Peninsula is a peninsula in the Far North of Russia, in the Siberian Federal District, that forms the northernmost part of the mainland of Eurasia. Administratively it is part of the Krasnoyarsk Krai Federal subject of Russia.
The Khatanga River is a river in Krasnoyarsk Krai in Russia. It begins at the confluence of the rivers Kotuy and Kheta. The Khatanga River is 227 kilometres (141 mi) long; the area of its basin is 364,000 square kilometres (141,000 sq mi). It flows into the Khatanga Gulf of the Laptev Sea, forming an estuary. There are more than 112,000 lakes, with a total surface area of 11,600 square kilometres (4,500 sq mi), in the basin of the river.
