An election to Kilkenny County Council took place on 23 May 2014 as part of that year's Irish local elections. 24 councillors were elected from three electoral divisions by PR-STV voting for a five-year term of office, a reduction of 2 seats from the previous election in 2009. In addition the Kilkenny Borough Council was abolished.

Kilkenny County Council

Kilkenny County Council is the authority responsible for local government in County Kilkenny, Ireland. As a county council, it is governed by the Local Government Act 2001. The council is responsible for housing and community, roads and transportation, urban planning and development, amenity and culture, and environment. The council has 24 elected members. Elections are held every five years and are by single transferable vote. The head of the council has the title of Cathaoirleach (Chairperson). The county administration is headed by a Chief Executive, Colette Byrne. The county town is Kilkenny city.

Contents

Fianna Fáil became the largest party after the elections securing 10 Council seats, a gain of 3. Fine Gael, by contrast, had a very poor set of results and lost 5 of their Council seats returning with 7 seats in all. Sinn Féin broke through in the county winning 3 seats, while Labour retained just 2 seats on the Council. Malcolm Noonan of the Greens was re-elected in Kilkenny city and Independents secured the final seat.

          2015 Carlow–Kilkenny by-election

          A by-election was held in the Dáil Éireann Carlow–Kilkenny constituency in Ireland on Friday, 22 May 2015, to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Fine Gael Teachta Dála (TD) Phil Hogan on his appointment as European Commissioner. It was held on the same day as national referendums on marriage equality and the age of eligibility for election to the office of president. The Electoral (Amendment) Act 2011 stipulates that a by-election in Ireland must be held within six months of a vacancy occurring. The by-election writ was moved in the Dáil on 29 April 2015.
