It stars Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd, Nathan Gamble, Kris Kristofferson, Cozi Zuehlsdorff in her film debut, and Morgan Freeman. The book and film are inspired by the true story of Winter, a bottlenose dolphin that was rescued in December 2005 off the Florida coast and taken in by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Winter lost her tail after becoming entangled with a rope attached to a crab trap, and was fitted with a prosthetic one.

Dolphin Tale 2 is a 2014 American family film written and directed by Charles Martin Smith as the sequel to his 2011 film Dolphin Tale. It was released on September 12, 2014 and tells the story of another dolphin at the hospital named "Hope". After Winter's elderly companion and surrogate mother, Panama, dies, Winter's future is in jeopardy, unless Sawyer, Clay, Hazel, and the rest of the Clearwater Marine Aquarium team can find a new companion for her. The film received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics and grossed $57.8 million.

Hope is a bottlenose dolphin at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Clearwater, Florida, USA. She is the subject of the film Dolphin Tale 2, a dramatization of her story and the continuing story Winter from Dolphin Tale. Hope was found in the Indian River Lagoon of Florida December 11, 2010, by a local fisherman. Hope was taken to Clearwater Marine Aquarium where she resides today.
