Graceland is an American drama television series created by Jeff Eastin that premiered on the USA Network on June 6, 2013. [1] On October 1, 2015, USA Network cancelled Graceland after three seasons. [2]

Premise

A group of undercover agents from various United States law-enforcement agencies, including the DEA, the FBI, and ICE, live together in a confiscated Southern California beach house known as "Graceland". Rookie FBI agent Mike Warren is assigned to the house fresh out of Quantico training. [3] [4]

Production

Although set in Southern California, Graceland was primarily filmed in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and other parts of South Florida. The producers of the show said this was because of tax incentives provided by the State of Florida. [10]

Reception

Review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reports a 71% approval rating for the first season, with an average rating of 6.3/10 based on 31 reviews. The website's consensus reads, "Graceland is a formulaic cop show, but its tight pacing and intriguing plot twists make for light, escapist fare." [11] On Metacritic, the series holds a 58 score out of 100, based on 26 reviews, indicating "mixed or average" reviews. [12]

Enrique "Kiki" Camarena Salazar was an American intelligence officer for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). In February 1985, Camarena was kidnapped by corrupt police officers hired by the Guadalajara Cartel. He was interrogated under torture and murdered. Three leaders of the cartel were eventually convicted in Mexico for Camarena's murder. The U.S. investigation into Camarena's murder led to ten more trials in Los Angeles for other Mexican nationals involved in the crime. The case continues to trouble U.S.–Mexican relations, most recently when Rafael Caro Quintero, one of the three convicted traffickers, was released from a Mexican prison in 2013. Caro Quintero again was captured by Mexican forces in July 2022.

On 9 November 1999, two agents from the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) were threatened at gunpoint and nearly killed in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, by gunmen of the Gulf Cartel, a criminal group based in the area. The two agents traveled to Matamoros with an informant to gather intelligence on the operations of the Gulf Cartel. As they cruised through one of the properties owned by the criminal group, they noticed several vehicles following them. The agents were forced to a stop and were corralled by a convoy of eight vehicles, from which 15 gunmen emerged and surrounded the agents' car. Some of them wore uniforms of the local police. Among the gunmen was the former kingpin Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, who recognized the informant and ordered the three of them to get out of their vehicle.

The Last Narc is a docuseries about the 1985 death of U.S. DEA agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena. The series interviews DEA agents and witnesses to Camarena's death who state that he was murdered by Mexican drug lords, with the complicity of the CIA. The series was released by Amazon in July 2020.
