Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor Inc., also known as Kinmen Distillery, KKL, is a distillery in Kinmen County, Taiwan and owned by Kinmen County Government. The distillery is known for its Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor, and provides good tax income for the local government. The company also runs a basketball team, the Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor Basketball, in the Super Basketball League of Taiwan.
Yeh Hua-cheng (葉華成) opened Jincheng Distillery in 1950 to make Kaoliang in Kinmen. The next year, 1951, Commander Hu Lien in charge of the Kinmen Defense Command tasted Yeh's Kaoliang and thought it was great. At the time, Hu had to resolve financial issue of his forces, therefore this gave him an idea to open up a distillery for the Defense Command. Hu initially wanted to contract Yeh to produce the Kaoliang, but was turned down as Yeh thought he could not produce such an amount of liquor. Hu then decided to invited Yeh to become a technician in his distillery, but to no avail.
On 3 September 1952, Hu decided to use his authority and forcefully appoint Yeh as the Technical Section Manager for the Command's distillery, Affiliated Distillery of Kinmen Economy Control Division, at the same time confiscating Yeh's distilleryand using it for his Affiliated Distillery. Hu also built a new factory for the distillery. [1]
In 1954, the construction of the new factory was completed and named "Jiulong River Distillery" (九龍江酒廠). In 1956, with the relocation of Fujian Provincial Government to Taiwan, Jiulong River Distillery was renamed to Kinmen Distillery (金門酒廠). [2] On Feb 16 1998, the government-owned company was founded, and Kinmen Distillery was no longer directly managed by the local government. [3]
Kinmen, alternatively known as Quemoy, is a group of islands governed as a county by the Republic of China (Taiwan), only 10 km (6.2 mi) east from the city of Xiamen in Fujian, located at the southeastern coast of the People's Republic of China, from which they are separated by Xiamen Bay. Kaoliang liquor, Gaoliang liquor or Sorghum liquor is a strong distilled liquor of Chinese origin made from fermented sorghum. It is a type of light-aroma Baijiu. The liquor originates from Dazhigu, first appearing in the Ming Dynasty and is widely consumed across northern China in provinces such as Hebei, Shaanxi, and Shandong. It is primarily made and sold in China and Taiwan, but is also popular in Korea, where it is called goryangju or bbaegal. Kaoliang ranges usually between 38 and 63 percent alcohol by volume. At present, world's highest alcohol content of kaoliang liquor is up to 92% produced by Chyi Leh Wei Distillery in Taiwan.
Lieyu Township (Liehyu) is a rural township in Kinmen County (Quemoy), Fujian Province, Republic of China (Taiwan). It consists mainly of three islands located to the west of Greater Kinmen and immediately to the east of Xiamen (Amoy) of the People's Republic of China: Lesser Kinmen, Dadan, and Erdan.

Wuqiu is a rural township of Kinmen County (Quemoy), Taiwan (ROC) made up of a group of islands in the Taiwan Strait comprising two major islands, Daqiu and Xiaoqiu. Wuqiu Township is nominally de jure part of Futian County, Fukien of the Republic of China. It is the smallest township in Kinmen County and is located 72 nmi (133 km) northeast of the rest of the county. The township is 73 nmi (135 km) from the Port of Taichung on Taiwan. The closest territory under China (PRC) control is the neighboring Luci Island, Xiuyu District, Putian, Fujian, which is 9 nmi (17 km) to the north-northwest.
