Kinshasha Holman Conwill (born April 11, 1951) is an American museum director, arts and management consultant, author, and serves as a board member for numerous organizations within the US-American cultural sector.
Kinshasha Holman Conwill was born on April 11, 1951, in Atlanta. Her parents were Mariella Ukina Ama Holman and Moses Carl Holman, the latter an editor, author, and central figure in the civil rights movement. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, as a National Achievement Scholar. [1]
She studied at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and received her B.F.A. in 1973. In 1980, she graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a M.B.A. degree. [1]
During her studies in Los Angeles, Conwill worked as an arts educator and activities coordinator for the Hollyhock House. After her graduation in 1980, she became the Deputy Director at the Studio Museum in Harlem and subsequently served as Director from 1988 until 1999. [2] Conwill described her time at the museum and the meaning of the institution for the Black community at the occasion of their 50th anniversary:
The Museum was everything. It was a community center, an artists’ circle, a forum for amazing conversations and intellectual discussions, a meeting ground, a vibrant place that had a lot of owners. I think this has stayed true for the Museum. I saw it as a center of life not just in Harlem, but also of New York, and, in some ways, the center of a much larger black world and art world.

During her time as the museum's director, they collaborated with artists such as Elizabeth Catlett, Miles Davis, Maren Hassinger, Luis Jiménez, Glenn Ligon, James Luna, Andres Serrano, James VanDerZee, and David Wojnarowicz. [2] Furthermore, she conceptualized, organized, or co-organized more than 40 major exhibitions for the Studio Museum, some of which also travelled across the country. [3]
Between 1999 and 2005, Conwill worked in several positions within New York's cultural sector, among others at the American Association of Museums, the New York City Creative Communities program, the National Museum of the American Indian, the New York Foundation for the Arts, as well as the New York City Arts Coalition. In 2005, she was appointed as deputy director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. Her role includes fundraising, external partnerships, expanding the museum's collections, and developing exhibitions and programming. She also acts as editor, author and co-author for several of the institution's publications. [1] [4]
Conwill has also acted as a board member for major arts and cultural organizations, such as the Provisions Library in Washington, D.C., the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Municipal Art Society, and the Rockefeller Foundation. [1]
From 1971 until his death in 2016, Conwill was married to the artist Houston Conwill. [5]

Betty Blayton was an American activist, advocate, artist, arts administrator and educator, and lecturer. As an artist, Blayton was an illustrator, painter, printmaker, and sculptor. She is best known for her works often described as "spiritual abstractions". Blayton was a founding member of the Studio Museum in Harlem and board secretary, co-founder and executive director of Harlem Children's Art Carnival (CAC), and a co-founder of Harlem Textile Works. She was also an advisor, consultant and board member to a variety of other arts and community-based service organizations and programs. Her abstract methods created a space for the viewer to insert themselves into the piece, allowing for self reflection, a central aspect of Blayton's work.

Professor Emerita of Performance Studies at New York University, she is best known for her interdisciplinary contributions to Jewish studies and to the theory and history of museums, tourism, and heritage. Leigh has often said that her work is focused on “Black female subjectivity,” with an interest in complex interplays between various strands of history. She was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine in 2023.
Houston Eugene Conwill was an American multidisciplinary artist known best for large-scale public sculptural installations. Conwill was a sculptor, painter, and performance and conceptual artist whose site-specific works explore and celebrate spirituality and African-American artists, activists, and intellectuals. Studio Museum in Harlem recognised his body of work as a "lasting monument to black culture."

She was best known for her work at the Smithsonian Institution, where she was Director of Education, responsible for directing its work to help educate K-12 students. She was also a specialist in African-American history.
Nancy E. Gwinn is an American librarian and administrator. She was the director of the Smithsonian Libraries, the world's largest museum library system, from 1997 until her retirement in 2020.
Joe Minter is an American sculptor based in Birmingham, Alabama. His African Village in America, on the southwest edge of Birmingham, is an ever-evolving art environment populated by sculptures he makes from scrap metal and found materials; its theme is recognition of African American history from the first arrivals of captured Africans to the present. Individual pieces from Minter's thirty-year project have been in major exhibitions in the United States and are in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others.
Mavis Iona Pusey was a Jamaican-born American abstract artist. She was a printmaker and painter who was well known for her hard-edge, nonrepresentational images. Pusey drew inspirations from urban construction. She was a leading abstractionist and made works inspired by the constantly changing landscape.
