The UN is headquartered in New York City,in international territory with certain privileges extraterritorial to the United States,and the UN has other offices in Geneva,Nairobi,Vienna,and The Hague,where the International Court of Justice is headquartered at the Peace Palace.

Its powers as outlined in the United Nations Charter include establishing peacekeeping operations,enacting international sanctions,and authorizing military action. The UNSC is the only UN body with authority to issue resolutions that are binding on member states.

The United Nations General Assembly has granted observer status to international organizations,entities,and non-member states,to enable them to participate in the work of the United Nations General Assembly,though with limitations. The General Assembly determines the privileges it will grant to each observer,beyond those laid down in a 1986 Conference on treaties between states and international organizations. Exceptionally,the European Union (EU) was in 2011 granted the right to speak in debates,to submit proposals and amendments,the right of reply,to raise points of order and to circulate documents,etc. As of May 2011,the EU is the only international organization to hold these enhanced rights,which has been likened to the rights of full membership,short of the right to vote.
Katalin Annamária Bogyay is a Hungarian ambassador,diplomat,journalist and the President of the United Nations Association of Hungary since April 2021. She has been a lecturer at the Corvinus University of Budapest since 2022,and teaching at the Hungarian Diplomatic Academy since 2021. In 2021 she founded the Women4Diplomacy movement. She served as the 15th Permanent Representative of Hungary to the United Nations in New York. She is the former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Delegate of Hungary to UNESCO (2009–2014) and the President of the 36th session of UNESCO General Conference (2011–2013).
The United Nations Conference on International Organization (UNCIO),commonly known as the San Francisco Conference,was a convention of delegates from 50 Allied nations that took place from 25 April 1945 to 26 June 1945 in San Francisco,California,United States. At this convention,the delegates reviewed and rewrote the Dumbarton Oaks agreements of the previous year. The convention resulted in the creation of the United Nations Charter,which was opened for signature on 26 June,the last day of the conference. The conference was held at various locations,primarily the War Memorial Opera House,with the Charter being signed on 26 June at the Herbst Theatre in the Veterans Building,part of the Civic Center. A square adjacent to the Civic Center,called "UN Plaza",commemorates the conference.
Brazil is a non-permanent member of the United Nations. It has participated in peacekeeping operations with the UN in the Middle East,the former Belgian Congo,Cyprus,Mozambique,Angola,and more recently East Timor and Haiti. Brazil has been regularly elected as a non-permanent member to the Security Council since its first session in 1946 and is now among the most elected UN member states to the UNSC. Brazil was elected to become a member of the 15-country UN Security Council for the two-year term of 2022-23.
India was among the charter members of the United Nations that signed the Declaration by United Nations at Washington,D.C.,on 1 January 1942 and also participated in the United Nations Conference on International Organization at San Francisco from 25 April to 26 June 1945.
