The Kitsilano Trestle [1] (also known as CPR trestle [2] and CPR Kitsilano trestle [3] ) was a former railway bridge over False Creek, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
The first bridge, a timber trestle was begun in 1886 [4] [5] [6] or 1888 [7] to carry the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) to a proposed port on English Bay on the Kitsilano side, south of the Indian Reservation. It connected to more CPR lines on the south side, including the Arbutus Corridor to Richmond, purchased from the CPR in 2016 after a lawsuit decided by the Supreme Court of Canada. [8] [9]
However, due to the railway's decision to locate its depot and yards on the north side of False Creek (modern-day Yaletown) meant that the trestle saw little use until street cars of the B.C. Electric Railway rolled over it 1905. [7]
Being fixed, it blocked the flow of marine traffic into False Creek and was replaced in 1905 with a second bridge with a swinging span.
After World War II, industry began to leave False Creek, meaning the CPR used the Arbutus Corridor less. The second trestle was demolished in 1982, in anticipation of the World's Fair of 1986 (Expo 86). [4] [10] While there were proposals to convert the rail bridge to a pedestrian bridge, city council refused, citing the impaired flow of water into False Creek. [11]
Expo 86 brought a complete redevelopment of the False Creek area, notably due to the influence of Hong Kong entrepreneur Li-Ka Shing and his company Concord Pacific, which transformed the north shore into modern condominiums. [12]
The bridge was pivotal in the development of northeast modern-day Kitsilano, as the trestle provided quick access by streetcar to the inner city. [13]
The Kettle Valley Railway was a subsidiary of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) that operated across southern British Columbia, west of Midway running to Rock Creek, then north to Myra Canyon, down to Penticton over to Princeton, Coalmont, Brookmere, Coquihalla and finally Hope where it connected to the main CPR line.
The British Columbia Electric Railway (BCER) was an historic railway which operated in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. Originally the parent company for, and later a division of, BC Electric Company, the BCER assumed control of existing streetcar and interurban lines in southwestern British Columbia in 1897, and operated the electric railway systems in the region until the last interurban service was discontinued in 1958. During and after the streetcar era, BC Electric also ran bus and trolleybus systems in Greater Vancouver and bus service in Greater Victoria; these systems subsequently became part of BC Transit, and the routes in Greater Vancouver eventually came under the control of TransLink. Trolley buses still run in the City of Vancouver with one line extending into Burnaby.

The Island Rail Corridor, previously the Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway, is a dormant railway operation on Vancouver Island and is the only remaining railway there after the closure of the Englewood Railway in November 2017. The Island Corridor Foundation owns the former Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway corridor. The railway line is 225 kilometres (140 mi) in length from Victoria to Courtenay, known as the Victoria Subdivision, with a branch line from Parksville to Port Alberni known as the Port Alberni Subdivision at 64 kilometres (40 mi) in length, for a total 289 kilometres (180 mi) of mainline track. In 2006, the Island Corridor Foundation acquired the railway's ownership from the Canadian Pacific Railway.
Kitsilano is a neighbourhood located in the city of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Kitsilano is named after Squamish chief August Jack Khatsahlano, and the neighbourhood is located in Vancouver's West Side along the south shore of English Bay, between the neighbourhoods of West Point Grey and Fairview. Goldstream Provincial Park is a provincial park in British Columbia, Canada. It is known for the annual fall salmon runs in the Goldstream River, and the large numbers of bald eagles that congregate to feed at that time. The total size of the park is 3.79 km2. Sen̓áḵw or sən̓aʔqʷ, rendered in English as Snawk, Snawq, Sneawq, or Snawkw, is a village site of the Indigenous Squamish people, located near what is now known as the Kitsilano neighbourhood of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In 1869 the Colonial Government set aside land around the village, and in 1877 the Joint Reserve Commission established by the Provincial and Federal Governments to deal with land allotments to indigenous people in B.C., expanded the area set aside to approximately 80 acres (32 ha) as False Creek Indian Reserve No. 6 or more popularly the Kitsilano Indian Reserve. The village site was home for many Squamish, but after further settlement began in the Vancouver area, the inhabitants were forced to relocate to other nearby villages. This village was also the home of August Jack Khatsahlano, a prominent chief of the Squamish and a notable Vancouver historian on local Indigenous history.
Engine No. 374 is the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) locomotive that pulled the first transcontinental passenger train to arrive in Vancouver, arriving on May 23, 1887. This was a year after sister Engine No. 371 brought the first train to cross Canada into Port Moody, roughly 20 miles (32 km) to the east.
The Vancouver Greenway Network is a collection of greenways across Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Greenways are streets where pedestrians and cyclists are prioritized over motorized vehicles, through structures such as road closures and road diverters to prevent or limit motor vehicle traffic, widened sidewalk-promenades, narrowed road space, speed restrictions, bike lanes, raised sidewalks and speed bumps. The City of Vancouver hopes to create and maintain the trend of constructing new greenways to establish a network where, potentially, every citizen could access a city greenway within a 25-minute walking or a 10-minute cycling distance of their home.
