Kristin Hodson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, and prominent voice on the topic of sexual health in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints community.
Hodson was born in Virginia, raised in Utah, and attended Weber State University, BYU-Hawaii, and the University of Utah. [1] Her work as a therapist and an advocate have challenged long-held values and norms, like the 'premarital exam', among more traditional people in Utah and among members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Hodson's research includes maternal mental health, LGBT Mormon community, pornography, postpartum depression, and healthy sexuality. Teachings on Sexuality in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is deeply rooted in its doctrine. In its standards for sexual behavior called the law of chastity, top LDS leaders bar all premarital sex, all homosexual sexual activity, the viewing of pornography, masturbation, overtly sexual kissing, sexual dancing, and sexual touch outside of a heterosexual marriage. The Satanic panic in Utah is part of a broader moral panic that began in the 1980s as children in the United States, subjected to coercive interviewing techniques at the hands of zealous social workers, made unsubstantiated allegations of bizarre Satanic rituals and horrific sexual and physical abuse at the hands of day care workers. As the decade unfolded, clients of believing therapists began to make similar allegations, which are now generally seen as confabulations caused by iatrogenic therapeutic techniques such as hypnosis and automatic writing rather than the discovery of repressed memories. Despite the similarities between the allegations of adults and children, investigations produced only circumstantial, and in many cases contradictory evidence of the patients' disclosures. Reparative therapy is the pseudoscientific practice of attempting to change an individual's sexual orientation from homosexual or bisexual to heterosexual, or their gender identity from transgender to cisgender using psychological, physical, or spiritual interventions. There is no reliable evidence that such practices can alter sexual orientation or gender identity, and many medical institutions warn that conversion therapy is ineffective and potentially harmful.
