Kriti Sharma (born April 1988) is an artificial intelligence technologist, business executive and humanitarian. [1] [2] [3] As of 2018, she is the vice president of artificial intelligence and ethics at UK software company Sage Group. [4] [5] [6] Sharma is the founder of AI for Good UK, which works to make artificial intelligence tools more ethical and equitable. [7] Sharma has been named to Forbes magazine's 30 Under 30 Europe: Technology list, and appointed as a United Nations Young Leader. [8] [9] [10] In 2018, she was appointed as an advisor to the UK's Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. [11] [12] [13] Sharma's initiatives include Pegg, an accounting chatbot, [14] and rAInbow, a platform to support survivors of domestic violence. [15] She has called for a philosophy of "embracing botness", arguing that artificial intelligence should prioritize utility over human resemblance. [2] [16] [17] [18]

Early life

Sharma was born in 1988 in Rajasthan, India. She and her two siblings were brought up in Jaipur. She lives in London.[ citation needed ]

Education

She holds a Bachelors in Engineering (2010) and a Masters in Advanced Computer Science from University of St Andrews (2011). At the age of 21, Sharma was elected as a Rajiv Gandhi Science Fellow for her work in energy optimisation and its applications in astrophysics, material science, polymer and bioinformatics research. [19] [20] In 2010, Google awarded her the Google India Women in Engineering Award for excellence in computer science and demonstrated leadership in promoting diversity. [21] She was awarded a Systers Pass It On award by Anita Borg Institute for her work in educational outreach for girls in Rajasthan. [22]

Career

Barclays

In September 2011, Sharma joined Barclays, where she initially developed e-commerce platforms such as the Pingit mobile payments app. Pingit won the App Store Best of 2012 award. [1] [23] [24] [25] She was later appointed the Head of Big Data and Advanced Analytics at Barclays Africa, where she led a team of data scientists and created real-time analytics products. Her group focused on using machine learning to make user engagement with financial services intelligent and personalised. During this time, she also mentored several fintech and healthcare startups in Africa. [26] [27] [28] [29]

The Sage Group

In February 2016, Sharma joined the UK technology firm Sage, where she led mobile products for more than 6 million businesses globally. In July 2016, Sharma and Stephen Kelly, chief executive officer of Sage, launched Pegg, the world’s first personal artificial intelligence for business finance. [30] [31] [32] [33] [34] [35] [36] [14] Within six weeks of launch, Pegg was being used by people in 85 countries. [37]

In an effort to overturn gender stereotypes, Sharma and the Sage team chose to make Pegg gender-neutral. [38] In a 2018 interview, Sharma described how voice assistants such as Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa had been "given obedient, servile, female personalities," and expressed fear that children would become accustomed to "bark[ing] orders at a female voice assistant". [39]

Sharma also announced a partnership between Sage and Slack to create conversational workplace. [33] [40] She led a global research at Sage on millennial entrepreneurs in July 2016, focusing on their motivations and perceived obstacles to success. [41] [42]

AI for Good UK

In January 2018, Sharma founded AI for Good UK, an organization aiming to address humanitarian issues with artificial intelligence. [7] In November 2018, AI for Good launched rAInbow, a digital companion for victims of domestic violence in South Africa [15] [43] with Josina Machel, an activist and Nelson Mandela's step daughter. [44] rAInbow is supported by the Sage Foundation and the Soul City Institute of Social Justice. [45]

In 2018, Jeremy Wright, the UK's Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, appointed Sharma as an adviser on AI, Data Ethics and Innovation. [11] [12] [13]

A chatbot is a software application that aims to mimic human conversation through text or voice interactions, typically online. The term "ChatterBot" was originally coined by Michael Mauldin in 1994 to describe conversational programs. In 2017, he co-founded and became the chief scientific advisor of the Vector Institute in Toronto.

A virtual assistant (VA) is a software agent that can perform a range of tasks or services for a user based on user input such as commands or questions. Such technologies often incorporate chatbot capabilities to simulate human conversation, such as via online chat, to facilitate interaction with their users. The interaction may be via text, graphical interface, or voice - as some virtual assistants are able to interpret human speech and respond via synthesized voices.

Kuki is an embodied AI bot designed to befriend humans in the metaverse. Formerly known as Mitsuku, Kuki is a chatbot created from Pandorabots AIML technology by Steve Worswick. It is a five-time winner of a Turing Test competition called the Loebner Prize, for which it holds a world record. Kuki is available to chat via an online portal, and on Facebook Messenger, Twitch group chat, Telegram, Kik Messenger, Discord, and was available on Skype, but was removed by its developer. The AI also has accounts on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Twitter, as well as a game on Roblox.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Google DeepMind</span> Artificial intelligence company owned by Google

Google DeepMind, formerly DeepMind Technologies, is an artificial intelligence research laboratory which serves as a subsidiary of Google. It was originally founded in 2010 in the United Kingdom before being acquired by Google in 2014, becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Google parent company Alphabet Inc. after Google's corporate restructuring in 2015. The company is based in London, with research centres in Canada, France, and the United States.

Tay was an artificial intelligence chatbot that was originally released by Microsoft Corporation via Twitter on March 23, 2016; it caused subsequent controversy when the bot began to post inflammatory and offensive tweets through its Twitter account, causing Microsoft to shut down the service only 16 hours after its launch. According to Microsoft, this was caused by trolls who "attacked" the service as the bot made replies based on its interactions with people on Twitter. It was replaced with Zo.

Lawbots are a broad class of customer-facing legal AI applications that are used to automate specific legal tasks, such as document automation and legal research. The terms robot lawyer and lawyer bot are used as synonyms to lawbot. A robot lawyer or a robo-lawyer refers to a legal AI application that can perform tasks that are typically done by paralegals or young associates at law firms. However, there is some debate on the correctness of the term. Some commentators say that legal AI is technically speaking neither a lawyer nor a robot and should not be referred to as such. Other commentators believe that the term can be misleading and note that the robot lawyer of the future won't be one all-encompassing application but a collection of specialized bots for various tasks.

Haptik is an Indian enterprise conversational AI platform founded in August 2013, and acquired by Reliance Industries Limited in 2019. The company develops technology to enable enterprises to build conversational AI systems that allow users to converse with applications and electronic devices in free-format, natural language, using speech or text. The company has been accorded numerous accolades including the Frost & Sullivan Award, NASSCOM's Al Game Changer Award, and serves Fortune 500 brands globally in industries such as financial, insurance, healthcare, technology and communications.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has a range of uses in government. It can be used to further public policy objectives, as well as assist the public to interact with the government. According to the Harvard Business Review, "Applications of artificial intelligence to the public sector are broad and growing, with early experiments taking place around the world." Hila Mehr from the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at Harvard University notes that AI in government is not new, with postal services using machine methods in the late 1990s to recognise handwriting on envelopes to automatically route letters. The use of AI in government comes with significant benefits, including efficiencies resulting in cost savings, and reducing the opportunities for corruption. However, it also carries risks.

Shanghai Xiaoi Robot Technology Co. Ltd or Xiao-i is a Chinese artificial intelligence company founded in 2001 by Max Yuan and Pinpin Zhu. It develops AI technologies and industry applications specializing in data domain and Natural Language Processing.

Mariarosaria Taddeo is a senior research fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute, part of the University of Oxford, and deputy director of the Digital Ethics Lab. Taddeo is also an associate scholar at Said Business School, University of Oxford.

Meta AI is an artificial intelligence laboratory that belongs to Meta Platforms Inc. Meta AI intends to develop various forms of artificial intelligence, improving augmented and artificial reality technologies. Meta AI is an academic research laboratory focused on generating knowledge for the AI community. This is in contrast to Facebook's Applied Machine Learning (AML) team, which focuses on practical applications of its products.

Yellow.ai, formerly known as Yellow Messenger, is an enterprise conversational AI platform founded in 2016 and headquartered in San Mateo, California. It is an artificial intelligence platform that automates conversational experiences for customers and employees. It enables businesses to deliver human-like personalized interactions in the preferred language. The platform supports more than 135 languages.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Hallucination (artificial intelligence)</span> Confident unjustified claim by an AI

In artificial intelligence (AI), a hallucination or artificial hallucination is a confident response by an AI that does not seem to be justified by its training data, either because it is insufficient, biased or too specialised. For example, a hallucinating chatbot with no training data regarding Tesla's revenue might internally generate a random number that the algorithm ranks with high confidence, and then go on to falsely and repeatedly represent that Tesla's revenue is $13.6 billion, with no provided context that the figure was a product of the weakness of its generation algorithm.
