Kurds in Austria are residents or citizens of Austria of full or partial Kurdish origin. The number of Kurds living in Austria is unknown. Most estimates are around 100 thousand.

Sports

A popular pastime is sports. An excellent example is FC Newroz, which came into being in 2007 and has been able to win the championship in their league of the Viennese diocesan sports society. [2]

Kurdish dances are a group of traditional dances among Kurds. It is a form of a circle dance, with a single or a couple of figure dancers often added to the geometrical center of the dancing circle. At times musicians playing on a drum or a double reed wind instrument known as a zurna, accompany the dancers. Often there are dancers twirling handkerchiefs who lead the half-circled group of dancers. The dancers, generally the females, but also, on occasions, the males, wear traditional Kurdish clothes. The Kurds dance on several occasions such as Kurdish festivals, birthdays, New Years, Newroz, marriage and other ceremonies and the dances have several names which often relate to local names and traditions. Its noteworthy that these folkloric dances are mixed-gender which distinguishes the Kurds from other neighbouring Muslim populations. On March 3rd 2023, Iranian police shut down a sports centre over mixed-gender Kurdish dances.

Mazlum Doğan was a journalist and a founding member of the Kurdistan Workers' Party. He was a Kurdish Alevi. He was the first chief editor of the party's newspaper Serxwebûn. In 1979, he had planned to leave Turkey towards Syria, but was arrested and served time in the infamous Diyarbakir No. 5 prison. Mazlum Doğan committed suicide in protest of the Turkish coup d'état and the inhumane conditions he and other prisoners were facing inside of the penitentiary. Today he is seen as a hero and a martyr for the Kurdish resistance movement.

The Kurdish Sun, also commonly referred to by its kurdish name: Kurdish: ڕۆژ, romanized: Roj, is a burning golden sun and the national emblem of the Kurds. It has a religious and cultural history among the Kurds, dating back to ancient times. It's also found inside the flag of Kurdistan and the official flag of the Kurdistan Region. The sun disk of the emblem contains 21 rays of equal size and shape. Number 21 is a venerable number, standing for the renaissance in the ancient and original Kurdish religion, Yazdani, and its modern branches. The number 21 also symbolizes March 21, the holiday of Newroz, which is the Kurdish New Year.

Bijî Serok Apo is a slogan used by sympathizers with Abdullah Öcalan, the leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and can be translated into Long live leader Apo. Apo can be translated also into uncle. The slogan can lead to prosecution in Turkey and Germany.
