Kutlay Erk

Kutlay Erk (born 1952) is a Cypriot politician. He served as mayor of North Nicosia, the Turkish Cypriot part of Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, from 2002 to 2006. [1] Erk was elected to the post in June 2002 for a four-year term, leaving office in June 2006.

Nicosia International Airport Closed airport in Cyprus

Nicosia International Airport is a largely disused airport located 8.2 km (5.1 mi) west of the Cypriot capital city of Nicosia in the Lakatamia suburb. It was originally the main airport for the island, but commercial activity ceased following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. The airport site is now mainly used as the headquarters of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus.

Islam in Cyprus

Islam was introduced to Cyprus when the island finally fell to Umayyad conquerors during the Arab-Byzantine wars. Prior to this, the Muslim presence on the island was itinerant. Conversion to Islam was not compulsory but the majority of the Catholic Latin population of the island, along with a smaller subsection of the Greek Orthodox population, converted to Islam for preferential tax status–as dictated by the millet system.
