The Telugu Desam Party is an Indian regional political party with influence in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It was founded by Telugu movie star N. T. Rama Rao (NTR) on 29 March 1982 and has focused on supporting Telugu people. The party has won a five-time majority in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly and has emerged as the most successful political outfit in the state's history. It is currently the ruling party in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

The main parties in the state are the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Jana Sena Party (JSP), and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). Other parties that have small presence in the state include the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Indian National Congress (INC), and Left parties, including both Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Communist Party of India (CPI).
Shri Sudarshan Akarapu (Telugu:ఆకారపు.సుదర్శన్)(5 March 1954 – 20 July 2011) was an Indian politician from Telugu Desam Party. He was former Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, former Member of Legislative Assembly and TDP vice president. He died with a massive heart attack on 20 July 2011 in a private hospital in Hyderabad.

He was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) to the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Gajuwaka on behalf of Telugu Desam Party in 2014 and in 2024. He won with highest majority in the state in the 2024 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly election with 95,235 votes. Palla Srinivasa Rao has become well-known for his staunch opposition to the privatization of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. He is referred to as "the People's Leader" by the people of Visakhapatnam.
