Cassiel Nii Akwei Wuta-Ofei (born 9 April 1992), known professionally as LD or Scribz, is a British rapper. Named as the "godfather of UK drill" and as a founding member of the UK drill scene, [5] [7] LD rose to fame in 2014 with the release of his debut single "Live Corn" and the release of "Let's Lurk" alongside 67 in 2016, featuring Giggs.

Wuta-Ofei has been imprisoned twice for two separate criminal convictions. His rapping style often includes heavy, Andante chanting with lyrics inspired by real events in his life and those of his entourage. LD is known for his distinct, powerful vocals and signature mask.

Early life

Cassiel Wuta-Ofei was born in 1992 and was raised by his mother and grandmother. He has three brothers and two sisters. [3]

Career

In 2014, 67 would rise to fame, with Wuta-Ofei – under the alias Scribz – as its frontman. In the same year, he was handed an ASBO, [8] which forbade him from performing in public under the name Scribz; this would result in him changing his alias to LD. In addition, he would start wearing a Phantom of the Opera-style mask, which was discovered in an office during an SB.TV session. [7] [9] In the same year, he would release "Live Corn"; according to Huck , the song "had the wider industry paying attention [to LD] almost instantly". [5]

In September 2018, LD released The Masked One, which spent one week the UK Albums Chart at number 69. [10] Following its release, an article by HotNewHipHop noted that he "contains the image, flow and delivery to become [67's] defining breakout artist". [11] The mixtape was followed in 2021 by Who's Watching. [12] In an interview with VICE , he stated that it was named as such because "you never know who's watching you", also saying that it was his last story of him against the police. [8] He would also release several remixes of his single "Rich Porter" following Brexit; an article by GRM Daily states the remixes were made in order to "keep his musical connections [in the European Union]". [13]

Following his release from prison in late 2021, LD released "First Day Out". [14]

Criminal convictions

In 2014, Wuta-Ofei was issued an ASBO that banned him from making and performing music for two years. [15] [16] Following this, Wuta-Ofei donned a mask and changed his artist name to LD, with his first tune under the new moniker being "Live Corn". [17] In 2016, Wuta-Ofei's ASBO order came to an end, resulting in him releasing a song called "Wicked and Bad", in which he sent for opposing gangs. Within the song, he mentioned that Scribz and LD are the same person. In 2017, Wuta-Ofei was jailed for six months for possession of a knife. [18] [4]

In December 2019, Wuta-Ofei was found guilty of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs (crack cocaine and heroin) and jailed for 4 years and six months. [19] [20] He was released from prison in November 2021. [14]

UK rap, also known as British hip hop or UK hip hop, is a music genre and culture that covers a variety of styles of hip hop music made in the United Kingdom. It is generally classified as one of a number of styles of R&B/hip-hop. British hip hop can also be referred to as Brit-hop, a term coined and popularised mainly by British Vogue magazine and the BBC. British hip hop was originally influenced by the dub/toasting introduced to the United Kingdom by Jamaican migrants in the 1950s–70s, who eventually developed uniquely influenced rapping in order to match the rhythm of the ever-increasing pace and aggression of Jamaican-influenced dub in the UK. Drill is a subgenre of hip hop music that originated in Chicago in the early 2010s. It is sonically similar to the trap music subgenre and lyrically similar to the gangsta rap subgenre. Early drill artists are noted for their explicit, confrontational style of lyricism and association with crime in Chicago, especially the Black Disciples and Gangster Disciples. The genre progressed into the American mainstream in 2012 following the success of pioneering rappers like Chief Keef, Lil Reese, Lil Durk, Fredo Santana, G Herbo, Lil Bibby and King Louie, who had many local fans and a significant internet presence alongside producer Young Chop. Other rappers, such as Lil JoJo, FBG Duck, S. Dot, Edai, L'A Capone, RondoNumbaNine, SD and producer Leek-E-Leek also contributed to the early drill scene. The growing fanbase sparked major label interest, leading to deal negotiations and signings.

The song saw commercial success, peaking at number three on the UK Singles Chart. The song has been certified platinum in the United Kingdom by the BPI, indicating 600,000 combined sales and streams. The music video has gained over 429 million views on YouTube as of June 2024.

UK drill is a subgenre of drill music and road rap that originated in the South London district of Brixton from 2012 onwards. While being sonically distinct from Chicago drill music, it embraces its aesthetic and melds it with road rap, a British style of gangsta rap that became popular in the years prior to the existence of drill. UK drill lyrical content tends to be truculent, depicting the harsh realism of their lifestyles. The explicit lyricism has stimulated discussion about whether the subgenre is a factor in an increase in knife crime in London. Gang affiliation and socioeconomically-deprived backgrounds are common amongst UK drill artists.

Marvin William Bailey, known professionally as Fredo, is a British rapper and singer from Mozart Estate, Kilburn, London. He had a UK number 1 single in 2018 with fellow rapper Dave called "Funky Friday". He has collaborated on successful tracks with many other rappers, including Dave, Central Cee, Tory Lanez, Pop Smoke, Stormzy, Headie One and Young Adz.

67 are a British music group and street gang in the UK drill scene originally composed of members LD, Monkey, Dimzy, Liquez, ASAP and SJ. The group gained notoriety following the police shooting of Chris Kaba.

Nathan Tokosi, known professionally as DigDat, is a British rapper from Deptford, London. His single "Air Force" peaked at number 20 on the UK Singles Chart following the release of the remix featuring Krept and Konan and K-Trap; this was the first time one of his tracks had entered the top 20. His next single, "No Cap" with Loski, peaked at number 51.

Irving Ampofo Adjei, known professionally as Headie One, is a British rapper and singer. Devonte Kasi Martin Perkins, better known by his stage name K-Trap, is a British rapper and songwriter from South London. He is known for his prominence in the UK drill scene, releasing notable mixtapes such as The Last Whip (2017), The Re-Up (2018) and No Magic (2019). Previously, K-Trap was widely known for wearing a balaclava to conceal his identity until June 2019 when he revealed his face for the first time in the music video for his single ‘Big Mood’, promoting his mixtape No Magic.

Onefour are an Australian drill and rap group originating from the Western Sydney suburb of Mount Druitt. They are regarded by many as the pioneers of drill music in Australia, following a run of viral singles in 2019. The group has four core members: J Emz, Spenny, Lekks and Celly. YP was also a member but he left the group in 2024 to focus on religion.

OFB, short for Original Farm Boys, is a British hip hop collective based in Broadwater Farm, North London. OFB is one of the most prominent UK drill groups.

Pa Salieu Gaye is a British rapper and singer. He is signed to Warner Records. He gained recognition in January 2020 with the single "Frontline", which was the most-played track of 2020 on BBC Radio 1Xtra. His style blends elements of afrobeats, grime and UK drill. He released his debut mixtape titled Send Them to Coventry on 13 November 2020.

His second mixtape 23 was released on 25 February 2022 and debuted atop the UK Albums Chart.

His third mixtape Noughty By Nature was released on 15 April 2022, debuting at number one on the UK Albums Chart. His fourth mixtape Back To Square One was released in August 2023.

Jyrelle Justin O'Connor, known professionally as Loski, is a British rapper and singer from Kennington, London. He is part of the Kennington-based UK drill group Harlem Spartans.

Joshua Emmanuel Pinto João Eduardo, known professionally as Blanco, is a British rapper and singer. Beginning his career in 2015, he released his debut EP, English Dubbed, in 2019, and debut mixtape, City of God, in 2021. He is part of the UK drill group Harlem Spartans.
