La Jerne Terry Cornish is an American academic administrator who is the 10th president of Ithaca College. She was previously the provost,executive vice president,and interim president at Ithaca. Cornish was a professor and the associate provost for undergraduate students at Goucher College.
Cornish was born to Dolores Stokes and Joe W. Terry. She has two brothers. [1]
Cornish completed a B.A. in English at Goucher College in 1983. [2] She worked as a language arts instructor for Baltimore City Public Schools from 1983 to 1992. [3] She was the coordinator of the Canton Project (Maryland's Tomorrow) from 1992 to 1998. [3] Cornish earned a M.Ed. with a concentration in at-risk students from Goucher College in 1994. [2] She also worked as a house principal at the Highland House from 1996 to 1998. Cornish was an assistant principal at Canton Middle School in 1998. [3]
She earned a Ph.D. in language,literacy,and culture at the University of Maryland,Baltimore County in May 2005. [4] [5] Her dissertation was titled Do you See What I See? An Analysis of Beginning Teachers',Mentors',and Principals' Perceptions of the Blum Mentoring Program. Patricia Scully was her doctoral advisor. [5]
From 1998 to 2005,Cornish was an instructor in Goucher College's education department. [3] She became an assistant professor in 2005. [2] Cornish was the first African American alumna at Goucher to be awarded tenure and the first African American to serve as chair of the faculty and associate provost for undergraduate students. [4]
Cornish joined Ithaca College as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs in 2018. [4] She was promoted to provost and executive vice president. Cornish became the interim president on August 30,2021,following Shirley Collado's resignation. [4] She was named as the 10th president by the board of trustees on March 7,2022. [6]
Cornish was married to Wayne Cornish. They have a son. In 2005,Cornish resided in Aberdeen,Maryland. [7] She is married to school administrator Deborah Ptak. [8]
Ithaca College is a private college in Ithaca,New York. It was founded by William Egbert in 1892 as a conservatory of music. Ithaca College is known for its media-related programs and entertainment programs within the Roy H. Park School of Communications and the Ithaca College School of Music,Theatre,and Dance. The college has a liberal arts focus,and offers several pre-professional programs,along with some graduate programs.
Goucher College is a private liberal arts college in Towson,Maryland. Founded in 1885 as a non-denominational women's college in Baltimore's central district,the college is named for pastor and missionary John F. Goucher,who enlisted local leaders of the Methodist Episcopal Church to establish the school's charter. Goucher relocated to its present Towson campus in 1953 and became coeducational in 1986.
Janet Dudley-Eshbach,Ph.D. became president of Salisbury University in Salisbury,Maryland in June 2000. She is the eighth president and the first woman to hold that office in the seventy-five year history of the university. In 2005,she was named one of Maryland's Top 100 Women in 2005 by the Maryland Daily Record. She retired in June 2018.

Judy Jolley Mohraz is an American women's studies historian. She is a former president of Goucher College and the inaugural chief executive officer and president of the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust. Mohraz is the second woman to serve as Goucher's president and the college's ninth president. Mohraz was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the United States Naval Academy Board of Visitors in 1996. She is a former long-time professor and associate provost of Southern Methodist University. Mohraz is the author of The Separate Problem,a collection of case studies of Black education in the Northern United States from 1900 to 1930.
