Lafif Lakhdar (also written "Al-Afif Al-Akhdar" or "Afif Lakhdar") was a French-Tunisian writer and journalist. He was born the 6th of February 1934 in Maktar and died the 26th of July 2013. [1]

Life

Lafif Lakhdar was born into a very poor family.[ citation needed ] He studied in a madrasa and applied the University of Ez-Zitouna in Tunis  ; he became a lawyer in 1957. He left Tunisia in 1961 and moved to Algeria, where he was one of Ahmed Ben Bella's close friends. He began a long journey throughout the Middle East. In 1979 he settled in France. [2]

As a leftist thinker he took part to the debate on secularism in Muslim countries. As a journalist he worked for several newspapers : Al-Hayat, Al-Quds Al-Arabi and more recently for the online magazine Elaph.

Salim Ali Salam

Salim Ali Salam was a prominent figure in Beirut at the turn of the 20th century who held numerous public positions, including deputy from Beirut to the Ottoman Parliament, President of the Municipality of Beirut, and President of the Muslim Society of Benevolent Intentions (al-Makassed). He was the leader of the "Beirut Reform Movement," which called for the decentralization and modernization of the Ottoman Empire, and was also a member of the Executive Committee of the First Arab Congress which met in Paris in 1913 and formulated Arab national demands. He opposed Ottoman political repression during World War I, and the French Mandate of the post-war period. He stood out for his enlightened outlook and for his ability to communicate effectively with his contemporaries. He received the Ottoman nobility title of Bey. Today, a main avenue in Beirut is named after him.

Raif Khoury was a Lebanese writer, poet, essayist, novelist and playwright who was born in Nabay, Lebanon, then part of the Ottoman Empire towards the beginning of the twentieth century. He went to school in the neighboring town of Brummana to Broummana High School, where he started writing poetry at a very early age. He joined the American University of Beirut as an Arabic literature and history major and graduated with a BA in 1932. Even before he graduated, he started writing in literary magazines and papers such as Al Barq and Al Adab which were issued in Beirut at the time. During his lifetime, Khoury wrote more than 20 books and numerous articles in many of the literary magazines and journals as well as daily newspapers of his time.

Muhammad Saleh Al-Jaberi Tunisian researcher and scholar

Muhammad Saleh Al-Jaberi was a Tunisian researcher and scholar. He was born in the Tunisian city of Tozeur in February 1940, and he died in June 2009 in the Tunisian city of Ariana. Al-Jaberi specialized in recording the historical and literary movement in the Maghreb, specifically in Algeria, Libya, and Tunisia. This could be seen in his studies and researches on Tunisian literature and culture. As a poet, Al-Jaberi also excelled in his narratives in short stories and novels, and he leaned towards realistic narratives that combine direct recordings and history in a clear, straightforward manner.
